What is Signal Desktop?

Signal is quietly rebuilding group governance while polls and pins push into everyday chats

The desktop beta line is shipping a steady run of user-facing social features: polls extended to one-to-one chats, admin deletion of recent group messages, an explicit End Group action, disappearing call events, and reorderable sticker packs. Each release carries one or two concrete changes rather than a bundle. Pinned chats also moved from 4 to 10.

What is Twilio?

Twilio's July is compliance plumbing: template events, clearer error codes, tighter registration rules.

Twilio is shipping steadily across messaging, voice and serverless, but almost nothing this month is a new product surface. The work is in the operational layer around channels customers already use: WhatsApp template lifecycle events, a stricter A2P/Toll-Free brand classification rule, a re-mapped RCS delivery error, and a Node.js 24 runtime for Functions. Lookup's Line Status beta is the one net-new data capability, and it is scoped to answering whether a mobile number is reachable.

Signal Desktop vs Twilio: editorial side-by-side

S5.0

Signal is quietly rebuilding group governance while polls and pins push into everyday chats

◆ Current state

The desktop beta line is shipping a steady run of user-facing social features: polls extended to one-to-one chats, admin deletion of recent group messages, an explicit End Group action, disappearing call events, and reorderable sticker packs. Each release carries one or two concrete changes rather than a bundle. Pinned chats also moved from 4 to 10.

◆ Where it's heading

Two threads run through the window. One is group administration — admins gained message deletion and a way to formally close a group, turning groups from open-ended threads into objects with a lifecycle. The other is bringing lightweight social mechanics from group chats down into individual ones. Both extend the surface without touching Signal's privacy model.

◆ Prediction

Expect the group-lifecycle work to continue with more admin controls, and for the features currently landing in desktop beta to promote into the stable line on the same weekly-to-biweekly rhythm.

◆ Current state

Twilio is shipping steadily across messaging, voice and serverless, but almost nothing this month is a new product surface. The work is in the operational layer around channels customers already use: WhatsApp template lifecycle events, a stricter A2P/Toll-Free brand classification rule, a re-mapped RCS delivery error, and a Node.js 24 runtime for Functions. Lookup's Line Status beta is the one net-new data capability, and it is scoped to answering whether a mobile number is reachable.

◆ Where it's heading

The pattern is Twilio removing the polling loops and misleading signals developers had to work around. Template approvals move from Content/Senders API polling to Event Streams subscriptions; RCS device-unreachable failures get their own code instead of borrowing the validity-period one; A2P registrants get email notifications at four lifecycle stages instead of watching the Console. Carrier and Meta compliance is being turned into an event-driven surface rather than a set of manual checks.

◆ Prediction

Expect more channel lifecycle events to land in Event Streams next, and the 30046 code to be extended to other OTT channels — Twilio says it intends 30046 as the standard device-unreachable signal beyond RCS.
