◆Current state
The 1.12.x line is steady interface work: presence status threaded through the member list, DM header, room summary and autocomplete; URL preview bundles (MSC4095) both sent and rendered; and an auto-collapse behaviour that gets the left panel out of the way during calls and on narrow windows. Alongside 1.12.25, four extension modules — widget toggles, widget lifecycle, restricted guests and a banner — all cut v1.0.0 on the same day.
◆Where it's heading
Two threads run in parallel. The client itself is being tightened around calls and presence, with MSC3391 and MSC3852 support removed as the spec surface narrows. The more consequential one is the module set: four modules reaching v1.0 together is what a stabilising extension API looks like, and it points at deployments customising Element without maintaining a fork.
◆Prediction
With four modules at v1.0, the next thing to watch is whether the module count grows or the existing ones start taking versioned breaking changes — the first would mean the API is being adopted, the second that it is still settling. The entries do not say which.
