A side-by-side editorial comparison of Libredesk and LiveAgent — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Libredesk's v2.9 release candidates add WhatsApp, email aliases and cited AI replies.
Libredesk, an open-source helpdesk, is shipping v2.9.0 as a run of release candidates, while the Docker latest tag stays on v2.8.0. rc.8 added a WhatsApp inbox, proactive live-chat messages, a help center inside the widget, AI tools in copilot that need agent approval, and an installable app. rc.9 adds email aliases, help-center citations on AI replies, and tighter session and visibility controls.
LiveAgent teaches its AI chat operator to step aside when a human walks in.
LiveAgent 5.69.5 refines the AI operator that took over live chats in late September: visitors see a typing indicator while it composes, agents get a "Take over from AI" button, and the bot now leaves the chat once a human accepts a transfer. The same release adds on-demand translation of inbound messages, an Instagram DM reply tool for AI agents, and ICU MessageFormat for localization. The 5.67 and 5.68 maintenance lines remain mostly caching and database-load fixes.

The product is spreading beyond email into WhatsApp and in-widget self-service. Its AI features are being built to stay checkable: copilot tools need agent approval and replies link to their sources. Each RC also closes access gaps, such as sessions surviving password changes and agents seeing conversations they shouldn't.
The next likely step is a stable v2.9.0 that moves the latest tag off v2.8.0. The two visible RCs don't show when that will happen.

The sequence runs from groundwork (Gemini and Anthropic providers and an MCP server in August) to an AI operator inside the chat queue (5.69.4) to the handoff rules that make that operator safe to leave on (5.69.5). Translation and new channel tools widen where the AI can work. The steady performance work on the widget and chat lists reads as preparation for more automated traffic.
Expect the remaining translation stages (outbound replies, likely) and AI tools for more channels, following the Instagram DM pattern. How fast 5.69 features reach the maintenance branches is still unclear.
