The agent's bill became the product — Browser Use, Copilot and CloudZero all shipped the meter

The lead

Browser Use put its API behind X402 micropayments this month: top-ups from one cent, payment required only when a new browser opens, per-run cost caps scaled per model up to $100. That pricing does not describe a human with a credit card. Sub-cent top-ups and pay-per-open only make sense when the thing doing the buying is a program — and Browser Use is not alone in rebuilding its commercial surface around that customer.

The same move arrives today from four unrelated directions. GitHub Copilot shipped per-model token accounting in its usage report, the necessary companion to a roster that swaps models weekly. Notion's model picker now exposes speed, intelligence and cost scorecards with a per-request effort dial, pushing the spend decision down to whoever writes the prompt. Writer wrapped Palmyra X6 in governance and budget language instead of capability claims. And CloudZero started attributing Codex spend to the work that caused it, so an agent's token bill lands against a team and a feature rather than a shared AI line item. The meter stopped being billing plumbing and became the thing being sold.

What moved

  • The mirror image is giving it away. Firecrawl opened its Research Index — 3M+ arXiv papers, 41M+ life-sciences papers — turning a metered data product into a distribution channel for the paid scraping and monitoring endpoints around it. Windmill moved BigQuery and Snowflake out of its Enterprise license and made dbt projects a first-class runtime on customer workers. Both treat the free tier as the sales motion, not the loss leader.
  • And the ledger tightens elsewhere. Tinybird is running a September 15 Classic sunset for Free and Developer plans; Appwrite moves build-artifact storage into billed usage on September 1 while jittering free-plan scheduled executions. Same accounting, opposite direction.
  • Identity is shipping ahead of authorization. WorkOS gave agents their own AuthKit identity and a token proxy that calls third-party APIs without the application ever holding a user's credential. Auth0 widened its Custom Token Exchange delegation model, Atlassian shipped Code Context into the Teamwork Graph for third-party agents, and AWS Machine Learning's AgentCore work is now observability, cost attribution and payment attestation. Nobody has shipped the revocation and audit half yet.
  • The analyst's chair keeps emptying. Lightdash moved authoring out to whatever coding agent the user already runs and kept the semantic layer as referee; Basedash's Tasks preview replaces charts with a ranked worklist and then watches whether the metrics move; MotherDuck shipped the CLI its agent-facing Flights and Guides were missing.
  • Modality and location. ComfyUI took in MiniMax Music 3 — full song generation, its first genuinely new output modality past image and video. Picsart put its 150-model playground on Mac and Windows with offline prompt tools, and Webflow extended citation-share analytics to Perplexity while selling the agents that write for it.

Sectors today

Devtools was the day's densest sector, and it read as plumbing for other people's agents rather than agent features — WorkOS, Windmill, Knock and Rootly all absorbed a layer their customers were previously writing themselves. Analytics is inflated by a large R/CRAN wave — roughly ninety packages, nearly all at zero velocity — with Rho's agentic R IDE prereleases and q2's ten-releases-in-six-days Rust port of Quarto the only things moving fast. Marketing-automation was the sharpest small sector: Gumloop shipped a pre-assembled agent under an enterprise governance floor, and Customer.io turned geofencing, knowledge sources and SMS carrier choice into platform primitives. Communication-messaging was consolidation: Twilio retiring Functions Classic while moving consent into APIs, Bandwidth adding branded calling, Mux making its AI video workflows API-addressable. Ecommerce was operational rather than strategic — ShipHero pulling receiving off the desktop, Shopify absorbing carrier and ads accounts into the admin, Canix letting an agent write into cannabis compliance records. Project-management and collaboration split between agent substrate (Atlassian, Notion) and permission hardening (Hive). Finance was quiet apart from CloudZero and Moov's FedNow rail work. Design carried the modality news. Video-conferencing produced only Mux and BigBlueButton's 4.0 beta polish.

Watch tomorrow

Three dated events are now load-bearing: Notion's Workers beta ends and has no announced price, Tinybird's Classic sunset lands September 15, and Appwrite starts billing build storage September 1. Each will show whether today's metering work was instrumentation or repricing. The open question Firecrawl's own entries do not answer is whether a free 44M-paper index survives its first real query volume — and WorkOS registering agent identities without shipping per-agent scopes or revocation is the gap most likely to close next. On the crawl side, Recruitee and Crelate are still returning SEO and podcast feeds instead of changelogs, and SocialBee is a status page under a product slug; hr-recruiting cannot be read from this data until those sources move.
