Elgg vs Twake Drive: at a glance
What is Elgg?
Elgg ships paired 7.1.2 and 6.3.9 patches: both branches stay in maintenance mode.
Elgg is a mature open-source PHP framework for self-hosted community platforms. The 7.0 major shipped in May 2026, and 7.1.0 in September added invitation-only groups, header images for generic entities and a MariaDB recommendation. 7.1.1 fixed profile access display and trash recovery, and on October 21 Elgg shipped 7.1.2 and 6.3.9 together, both with no release notes beyond the contributor list.
What is Twake Drive?
Twake Drive's second 1.108 beta makes OnlyOffice PDF editing opt-in and adds picker views.
Twake Drive ships beta releases every few weeks. 1.108.0-beta.1 was its largest in months, adding nested sharing, in-app invitations, a rebuilt move dialog, an optional AI writing assistant, OnlyOffice PDF opening and Twake Space embedding. beta.2 adds list and grid views to the file picker, opens PDFs in the standard viewer by default with OnlyOffice editing only when enabled, limits the writing assistant's ready message to Drive, and fixes shared-drive invitation declines.

Elgg
5.0COLLAB
Elgg ships paired 7.1.2 and 6.3.9 patches: both branches stay in maintenance mode.
◆ Current state
Elgg is a mature open-source PHP framework for self-hosted community platforms.
◆ Where it's heading
Elgg follows a predictable cadence: a feature minor, then single-digit patch releases, with paired backports on the 6.3 branch. The 7.1 features centred on finer access control and generic entity handling, and the follow-up patches stay in those areas. The project favours stability over pace.
◆ Prediction
More 7.1.x patches are likely, released in pairs with 6.3.x as happened again today. The entries give no signal about what a 7.2 would contain.
Twake Drive
5.0COLLAB
Twake Drive's second 1.108 beta makes OnlyOffice PDF editing opt-in and adds picker views.
◆ Current state
Twake Drive ships beta releases every few weeks.
◆ Where it's heading
The file picker work of the summer now shows up inside Drive and for connected apps. With Twake Space embedding and an AI assistant behind flags, Drive is becoming one component of a broader workspace suite; beta.2 pulling back the OnlyOffice PDF default shows the team tuning those additions before a stable release.
◆ Prediction
Expect further 1.108 betas fixing sharing and picker details before a stable 1.108; the entries don't show when the AI assistant will be enabled by default.
