A side-by-side editorial comparison of Elgg and Wiki.js — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Elgg 7.1.1 is a cleanup patch: the 7.x line is back to maintenance mode
Elgg is a mature open-source PHP framework for self-hosted community platforms. The 7.0 major shipped in May 2026, and 7.1.0 in September added invitation-only groups, header images for generic entities and a MariaDB recommendation. 7.1.1 is a bug-fix release covering upgrade listings, profile field access display, trash recovery and colour-scheme CSS.
Wiki.js 3.0 beta adds a glossary layer while still fixing how v2 sites migrate.
Wiki.js runs two tracks: 2.x stable, which now gets only security patches, and a 3.0 beta still labeled 'not for production'. Over the past month the beta added Excalidraw live collaboration, SCIM provisioning, an audit log, AsciiDoc and draw.io editing, notifications, RTL support, and inline annotations. The newest beta adds a glossary with auto-linking, child listings on folder pages, and a links-grid content block.

Elgg follows a predictable cadence: a feature minor, then single-digit patch releases, with security backports on the 6.3 branch alongside. The 7.1 features centred on finer access control and generic entity handling, and the 7.1.1 fixes touch those same areas (profile access, trash recovery). This project favours stability over pace.
More 7.1.x patches are likely, plus a coordinated 6.3.x security backport in a paired release as has happened before. The entries give no signal about what a 7.2 would contain.

The headline features are in place, and most releases now fill out navigation and structure: backlinks, folder listings, and now glossary terms that link automatically. Each release also ships migration fixes (v2 locale mapping, then rewriting 2.x paths to 3.x and hex-encoding non-Latin paths), which shows the team clearing the blockers for moving existing installs onto 3.0.
The glossary is marked work-in-progress, so the next betas will probably finish it alongside more v2-import and Docker reliability fixes. The entries still give no date for 3.0 dropping its beta label.
