Elgg vs SiYuan: at a glance
What is Elgg?
Elgg ships paired 7.1.2 and 6.3.9 patches: both branches stay in maintenance mode.
Elgg is a mature open-source PHP framework for self-hosted community platforms. The 7.0 major shipped in May 2026, and 7.1.0 in September added invitation-only groups, header images for generic entities and a MariaDB recommendation. 7.1.1 fixed profile access display and trash recovery, and on October 21 Elgg shipped 7.1.2 and 6.3.9 together, both with no release notes beyond the contributor list.
What is SiYuan?
SiYuan's sixth 3.8.10 alpha repeats alpha.5's list as the release nears beta.
SiYuan's 3.8.10 alpha.5 on November 3 lists 24 items, up from 19 in alpha.3. New this time: smarter LAN sync address picking on VPN and multi-interface setups, related database views in entry details, custom PDF page sizes, bottom-sheet dialogs on mobile and apostrophe-safe keyword search. The line already carried workspace-level AI memory, database sub-items, HTTP requests in templates and a built-in Markdown editor.

Elgg
5.0COLLAB
Elgg ships paired 7.1.2 and 6.3.9 patches: both branches stay in maintenance mode.
◆ Current state
Elgg is a mature open-source PHP framework for self-hosted community platforms.
◆ Where it's heading
Elgg follows a predictable cadence: a feature minor, then single-digit patch releases, with paired backports on the 6.3 branch. The 7.1 features centred on finer access control and generic entity handling, and the follow-up patches stay in those areas. The project favours stability over pace.
◆ Prediction
More 7.1.x patches are likely, released in pairs with 6.3.x as happened again today. The entries give no signal about what a 7.2 would contain.
SiYuan
5.0COLLAB
SiYuan's sixth 3.8.10 alpha repeats alpha.5's list as the release nears beta.
◆ Current state
SiYuan's 3.8.10 alpha.5 on November 3 lists 24 items, up from 19 in alpha.3.
◆ Where it's heading
SiYuan ships alphas every day or two and lets each release list grow until a freeze. The 3.8.10 line spreads across AI agent features, databases and mobile polish, while the desktop Electron process moves to strict TypeScript.
◆ Prediction
Expect more alphas, then a beta series that freezes the 3.8.10 list, as 3.8.9 did with its beta-to-RC run.
