The lead

For a week the agent story here has been infrastructure — control planes, identity, substrate. Today it moved into the products people actually work in, quieter than a launch: the assistant stopped being the optional path. Circle opened Eclipse to every customer with an AI that carries memory and roughly fifty domain skills and does the work of structuring courses and spaces, not just answering in them. Plain gave Sidekick its own page as the first sidebar item, scheduled runs with no thread attached, and connections to any MCP server. Respond.io is fitting its AI Agent with the behaviors a human agent has — waiting for a contact to finish typing, picking up a reopened conversation — which is what you build when it answers first, not when it deflects.

The tell isn't the autonomy. It's what shipped beside it. Workyard's Time Assistant now reads free-text worker notes and reallocates hours across cost codes, and still proposes rather than saves. Thread paired outbound calling with forced call termination and holiday closures every automated surface observes. Lokalise made AI scoring opt-in instead of firing on every Pro AI task. Chord made its copilot cite the customer's own business definitions before letting it build audiences from a chat. Nobody shipped an agent today. They shipped the brakes that let one run unattended.

What moved

  • Operator, not assistant. Sleekplan rebuilt around an AI layer that triages feedback instead of filing it. Superhuman now pre-drafts a reply to every message that needs one, while its Mail MCP drives multiple Gmail and Outlook accounts from outside the client entirely.
  • Write access crossed over. Streak's MCP server went from reading the CRM to creating boxes, moving deals between stages and logging emails. Rank Math kept adding rank-math/* tools until a WordPress SEO plugin became a server assistants read a site through, and Workato launched IT Support and EDI Genies a day apart with a Dev API returning full transcripts, LLM calls and guardrail evaluations.
  • The model layer re-segmented. Baseten added a Fast tier serving identical weights on dedicated capacity, then opened Model Labs to sell distribution to the labs themselves — inverting who the customer is. Gemini split Flash into 3.6, 3.5 Flash-Lite and 3.5 Flash Cyber. CloudZero shipped Model Rightsizer, an open-source agent that scores a task before it runs and routes it to the smallest model that can handle it. Telnyx added email so voice, SMS, WhatsApp and inference bill through one API.
  • Devtools optimized for a reader that isn't human. Buildkite cut roughly 40% off log-search responses and collapsed build state, failed jobs and log tails into one call; agent v4 becomes stable on 1 September. Auth0 pushed Cross App Access to Open Early Access alongside org-scoped roles. Tailscale made tailnets themselves provisionable over the API, and Honeycomb added attribute filters over Agent Conversations.
  • And one release that ignored all of it. Gravity Forms 3.0 shipped 28 July with accessibility on by default for every new form and international phone validation — no AI feature anywhere in the window.   • Customer support — four products, all moving the agent to first responder: Plain, Respond.io, Thread, Sleekplan.
  • Communication — Superhuman and Telnyx at opposite ends of one idea: the mail layer assistants call, and the network they call over.
  • AI assistants — model churn at Baseten and Gemini, against Khoj deprecating its own hosted cloud.
  • Analytics — Chord and Usermaven both widening ingestion so imported CRM and payment events count as native.
  • Finance, CRM, marketing, HR, ecommerce, project management, marketing automation — one clear move each: CloudZero, Streak, Rank Math, Workyard, Shopify, NocoBase wiring AI employees and JS blocks to call each other, and MailerLite putting an AI agent in its HTML editor.

Watch tomorrow

Two threads. The first is the write boundary: Streak, Chord and Plain all crossed from read to write in this window, and none of the releases said who reviews what the agent changed. Expect the audit surface to be the next thing shipped, or the next thing complained about. The second is the cost of living in the self-hosted tier — Khoj is winding down its hosted service, Bigcapital narrowed to report-accuracy fixes and went quiet, and Easy!Appointments has had 1.6.0 parked in beta since February. Separately, three of today's feeds are marketing blogs hiding product news: Neil Patel, Process Street — which has an MCP server it never announced in a release — and Avoma. Read their cadence as noise, not velocity.
