What is darktable?

darktable built a neural stack into a raw editor — and 5.6.1 is two months of stabilising it.

The 5.6 line is where darktable added an optional AI subsystem: an ONNX runtime disabled by default, GPU install scripts that detect the vendor, a SAM2.1 object-mask tool in the mask manager, and a neural restore module covering raw denoise, denoise and upscale. The 5.6.1 bug-fix release that just landed is 150 commits and 100 pull requests, and a large share of them are on that new stack — crashes on sensor-edge raws, a CFA buffer overrun on 4-Bayer sensors, ProRAW previews, sRaw rejection, model downloads that now resume. There are no new features in it at all.

What is Octopus.do?

Octopus.do's ChatGPT and Claude apps turn sitemap planning into a native LLM workflow, backed by an MCP server.

Octopus.do has been expanding its capability surface across three tracks: AI integration (official apps in ChatGPT and Claude, backed by an MCP server and public REST API), design handoff (Figma plugin generating high-fidelity, variable-based prototypes), and content editing (rebuilt editor with columns, tables, and text alignment; new copywriter team role). The most recent release adds project templates and a web crawl import that auto-fills pages with blocks and wireframes.

DESIGN
5.0

darktable built a neural stack into a raw editor — and 5.6.1 is two months of stabilising it.

◆ Current state

◆ Where it's heading

This is what a mature project looks like after it takes on a genuinely new subsystem: the feature release opens the surface, and the next two months close the holes in it. The failure modes being fixed are the telling part — they are format-coverage and memory-safety bugs across the raw pipeline, which is the cost of running inference on sensor data rather than on finished images. The rest of the release is ordinary raw-editor hardening: OpenCL correctness on AMD and rusticl, mask rendering, lighttable navigation.

◆ Prediction

Expect the 5.7 development cycle to widen model coverage rather than add a second AI surface, and further 5.6.x releases to keep working through raw-format edge cases in neural restore. The entries do not say whether the AI subsystem will stop being an opt-in build flag.

O6.3

Octopus.do's ChatGPT and Claude apps turn sitemap planning into a native LLM workflow, backed by an MCP server.

◆ Current state

Octopus.do has been expanding its capability surface across three tracks: AI integration (official apps in ChatGPT and Claude, backed by an MCP server and public REST API), design handoff (Figma plugin generating high-fidelity, variable-based prototypes), and content editing (rebuilt editor with columns, tables, and text alignment; new copywriter team role). The most recent release adds project templates and a web crawl import that auto-fills pages with blocks and wireframes.

◆ Where it's heading

The MCP server and REST API establish Octopus as a planning tool that AI agents can read and write natively, not just an export destination. The Figma plugin handles the downstream handoff; the editor rebuild sets up faster iteration on the core surface. Templates and crawl import are the obvious acceleration layer for teams using Octopus in AI-assisted site generation workflows — the pieces are connecting toward a pipeline where an AI plans the structure, Octopus holds the canonical information architecture, and Figma renders the prototype.

◆ Prediction

Octopus will deepen its AI integration — more agents via MCP, or native AI-generated sitemap suggestions — given the REST API and the earlier AI prompt export feature both point toward automated sitemap generation as a core use case.
