What is darktable?

darktable built a neural stack into a raw editor — and 5.6.1 is two months of stabilising it.

The 5.6 line is where darktable added an optional AI subsystem: an ONNX runtime disabled by default, GPU install scripts that detect the vendor, a SAM2.1 object-mask tool in the mask manager, and a neural restore module covering raw denoise, denoise and upscale. The 5.6.1 bug-fix release that just landed is 150 commits and 100 pull requests, and a large share of them are on that new stack — crashes on sensor-edge raws, a CFA buffer overrun on 4-Bayer sensors, ProRAW previews, sRaw rejection, model downloads that now resume. There are no new features in it at all.

What is Frame.io?

Frame.io launches 'Open in Firefly Video Editor' as the first in a planned series of Adobe suite integration links.

Frame.io is in a steady UX improvement cycle while making a significant strategic move in the most recent release: 'Open in Firefly Video Editor' bridges review directly to Adobe's new browser-based editing app, requiring no desktop install. Drive v1.11.0 polishes the mounted storage experience with resizable sidebars, smarter error handling, and large-upload stability fixes. A service disruption (resolved in 80 minutes with no data loss) is the only incident in the window.

DESIGN
5.0

darktable built a neural stack into a raw editor — and 5.6.1 is two months of stabilising it.

◆ Current state

◆ Where it's heading

This is what a mature project looks like after it takes on a genuinely new subsystem: the feature release opens the surface, and the next two months close the holes in it. The failure modes being fixed are the telling part — they are format-coverage and memory-safety bugs across the raw pipeline, which is the cost of running inference on sensor data rather than on finished images. The rest of the release is ordinary raw-editor hardening: OpenCL correctness on AMD and rusticl, mask rendering, lighttable navigation.

◆ Prediction

Expect the 5.7 development cycle to widen model coverage rather than add a second AI surface, and further 5.6.x releases to keep working through raw-format edge cases in neural restore. The entries do not say whether the AI subsystem will stop being an opt-in build flag.

6.3

Frame.io launches 'Open in Firefly Video Editor' as the first in a planned series of Adobe suite integration links.

◆ Current state

Frame.io is in a steady UX improvement cycle while making a significant strategic move in the most recent release: 'Open in Firefly Video Editor' bridges review directly to Adobe's new browser-based editing app, requiring no desktop install. Drive v1.11.0 polishes the mounted storage experience with resizable sidebars, smarter error handling, and large-upload stability fixes. A service disruption (resolved in 80 minutes with no data loss) is the only incident in the window.

◆ Where it's heading

The 'Open in Firefly' release explicitly marks itself 'the first of several Open in actions,' signaling Frame.io's repositioning from a standalone review tool into a hub that connects to the broader Adobe Creative Cloud. The V2 API deprecation (December 2026) is forcing third-party integrations onto V4. The Frame AI Assistant (in Labs) and InDesign multi-page previews powered by Adobe's own rendering engine reinforce the same pattern: Adobe is tightening the pipeline between Creative Cloud tools and Frame.io at both ends.

◆ Prediction

More 'Open in' actions will follow — likely Premiere Pro, After Effects, or Substance — and the V4 API migration push will create a wave of integration rebuilds that expand Frame.io's connectivity surface before the December 2026 V2 sunset.
