The agent contest moves up a layer: the fight is now over control planes, not agents
The lead
For weeks the story here has been "everyone is bolting on an agent." Today makes clear that phase is over. The most directionally significant moves aren't new agents — they're the layer being built above the agents to route, govern, and meter them. Speakeasy (velocity 8.8) reframed itself as a control plane for coding-agent skills across Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex — capturing what agents actually do through a hooks binary and attributing cost per skill. GitHub is retrofitting its whole surface the same way, wiring the Copilot agent into Linear issues and CI failures while building a governance step to review what agents change before it lands.
Underneath that layer, the frontier models have quietly become interchangeable routes. AWS Machine Learning landed Claude Opus 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 on Bedrock the same day; GitHub took Opus 5 and Gemini 3.6 Flash within days of each other. When the model swaps out weekly, the defensible position is the governance, context, and metering plane wrapped around it — which is exactly where today's leaders are digging in.
What moved
- Agent infrastructure, not agents. Sourcegraph shipped Code Finder — a search loop that returns exact files and line ranges to an agent more cheaply than the agent searching itself — recasting code search as agent infrastructure. Notion positioned its workspace as an orchestration layer for external agents and moves Workers to credit-based billing on August 11: own the surface, then meter it.
- The runtime layer. Langflow bolted A2A protocol, human-in-the-loop checkpoints, and ColBERT-style retrieval onto its visual builder, turning a flow-drawer into a standards-based agent runtime. The Anthropic TypeScript SDK tracked the Managed Agents surface release-by-release.
- Observability turns on agents. Honeycomb made LLM calls, tool invocations, and token spend first-class telemetry with Agent Timeline, while its redesigned Canvas uses agents to auto-investigate. CloudZero pushed cost visibility toward the agent bill itself.
- HR goes agent-operated. Workable and Fountain both shipped sparks: Workable widened the HR data surface for its Agent and MCP tools to act on, and Fountain gave its Cue assistant autonomous scheduling and made Sam per-tenant.
- The pattern reached everywhere. Even niche tools joined: Canix (cannabis compliance) shipped a Claude/ChatGPT MCP bridge, Streak made its Gmail CRM LLM-writable, SalesBlink turned its cold-email stack agent-native, and Neil Patel put Ubersuggest's SEO data inside ChatGPT and 37 MCP tools.
Sectors today
- Devtools & development — the day's center of gravity: Speakeasy, GitHub, Sourcegraph, Honeycomb, and Cosmic all building the plumbing agents run on.
- AI-assistants — AWS ML and the Anthropic SDK track a model layer that's commoditizing fast; DataRobot keeps its governance framing.
- HR-recruiting — Workable and Fountain both crossed into agent-operated workflows; the suite build-out is the connective tissue.
- Project-management & collaboration — Notion, Hive (AI Proofing into a trainable reviewer), and SmartSuite all metering structured work agents can touch.
- Marketing & marketing-automation — Neil Patel, SalesBlink, and Gumloop's Company Brain point the same way: embed the product where the assistant already is.
- Analytics & design — Basedash turned its AI analyst into a developer platform; shadcn/ui flipped its default primitive to Base UI and added chat-interface parts.
- Customer-support & lms-edtech — Xurrent turned Sera AI into shipping ITSM agents; EducateMe now runs evaluation and reporting on models.
Watch tomorrow
Notion's August 11 credit-based billing is the tell to watch: it's the first clear attempt to price agent usage rather than seats, and whether it holds will signal how the rest of the metering land-grab plays out. Expect more MCP connectors to keep landing as table stakes — the differentiation is shifting to the governance and cost-attribution layer Speakeasy and CloudZero are staking out. One caveat on the feed: several "updates" today were SEO-blog cadence, not product releases — Printful, Copperleaf, and Recruiterflow among them — worth discounting when the pattern looks like volume without shipping.
