What is Misskey?

Misskey offloads its embedded ML stack to external services and ships a critical security patch in consecutive major releases.

Misskey maintains a monthly major release cadence with an explicit beta/RC pipeline before stable releases. The 2026.7.0 cycle's defining architectural change was removing the bundled TensorFlow/nsfwjs NSFW detection in favor of an external HTTP service—substantially reducing installation complexity and ML dependency weight for self-hosters. The 2026.9.0 stable release carried critical security vulnerability fixes requiring urgent instance operator updates.

What is Pixelfed?

Pixelfed's 0.15 candidate adds an account-delete API and drops PHP 8.3.

Pixelfed has two release candidates out in October. 0.15.0-rc1 raises the hashtag follow limit from 25 to 100, adds an account deletion API route, fixes timelines for Mastodon clients, rejects follows to moved accounts and drops PHP 8.3. 0.14.5-rc1 fixed boost federation and added FEP-6757 support. The September 0.12.12 release changed captcha and locale environment variables.

Misskey
COMMS
5.0

Misskey offloads its embedded ML stack to external services and ships a critical security patch in consecutive major releases.

◆ Current state

Misskey maintains a monthly major release cadence with an explicit beta/RC pipeline before stable releases. The 2026.7.0 cycle's defining architectural change was removing the bundled TensorFlow/nsfwjs NSFW detection in favor of an external HTTP service—substantially reducing installation complexity and ML dependency weight for self-hosters. The 2026.9.0 stable release carried critical security vulnerability fixes requiring urgent instance operator updates.

◆ Where it's heading

Misskey is reducing its embedded dependency footprint, making instances lighter and more modular. Offloading NSFW detection to a configurable external service is the clearest example: instances that don't need content moderation avoid the ML stack entirely, while those that do can point to a dedicated service. This trend toward externalizing heavy subsystems continues the project's decentralized, operator-customizable philosophy.

◆ Prediction

Continued dependency reduction and broader ActivityPub federation improvements are likely. The 2026.8.0 alpha cycle signals the next major feature set is in active development, though content is not yet visible from the alpha.

P5.0

Pixelfed's 0.15 candidate adds an account-delete API and drops PHP 8.3.

◆ Current state

Pixelfed has two release candidates out in October. 0.15.0-rc1 raises the hashtag follow limit from 25 to 100, adds an account deletion API route, fixes timelines for Mastodon clients, rejects follows to moved accounts and drops PHP 8.3. 0.14.5-rc1 fixed boost federation and added FEP-6757 support. The September 0.12.12 release changed captcha and locale environment variables.

◆ Where it's heading

Most of the work is federation correctness and Mastodon-client compatibility, paired with large dependency upgrades across Laravel, Symfony and Guzzle. Breaking environment and runtime changes are arriving in clusters, so self-hosters face more upgrade steps per release.

◆ Prediction

Expect 0.15.0 stable after the RC, with more Mastodon API compatibility fixes. The entries don't show bigger product changes.
