A side-by-side editorial comparison of Element and Pixelfed — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Element 1.12.31 ships stable: mandatory device verification and in-app file viewers.
Element Web 1.12.31 went stable on the usual two-week cadence, carrying the RC feature list unchanged: device verification can no longer be skipped by default, Markdown and PDF attachments open in the right panel, local echoes show in the new timeline, and crypto wording at sign-in is clearer. It follows 1.12.30, which removed the legacy Module & Customisation API in favour of Module API v2.
Pixelfed's 0.15 candidate adds an account-delete API and drops PHP 8.3.
Pixelfed has two release candidates out in October. 0.15.0-rc1 raises the hashtag follow limit from 25 to 100, adds an account deletion API route, fixes timelines for Mastodon clients, rejects follows to moved accounts and drops PHP 8.3. 0.14.5-rc1 fixed boost federation and added FEP-6757 support. The September 0.12.12 release changed captcha and locale environment variables.

With the extension layer cleaned up, the team is putting effort into the core client: viewing files, calls and threads without leaving the room, and a stricter default security posture. The new timeline and room-list work point to a gradual front-end rebuild shipped in small pieces.
Expect a 1.12.32 RC within two weeks that continues the new timeline and room-list work. The entries don't show further Module API changes planned.

Most of the work is federation correctness and Mastodon-client compatibility, paired with large dependency upgrades across Laravel, Symfony and Guzzle. Breaking environment and runtime changes are arriving in clusters, so self-hosters face more upgrade steps per release.
Expect 0.15.0 stable after the RC, with more Mastodon API compatibility fixes. The entries don't show bigger product changes.
