BigBlueButton vs Goldcast: at a glance
What is BigBlueButton?
BigBlueButton 4.0 rc.5 drops Etherpad and makes BlockNote the only notes editor.
BigBlueButton 4.0.0-rc.5 removes Etherpad, so upgrading uninstalls bbb-etherpad and bbb-pads and leaves BlockNote as the only shared-notes editor. It also moves Node components to Node.js 24, switches the client to the 1.0 pre-release plugin SDK, and redesigns the poll and quiz panels. It follows two security-only candidates, and the project still recommends 3.0.x for production.
What is Goldcast?
Goldcast is polishing the production booth: stage layouts, audio control, and one brand kit.
Goldcast runs B2B events and repurposes the recordings through Content Lab. The recent work splits between the live room - dynamic stage layouts, emoji reactions, animated PowerPoint support, faster removal of disruptive attendees - and the post-production side, where speaker audio can be balanced or muted per track and transcription now covers Asian languages. A central brand asset store now holds fonts, colors, logos, and brand voice for use across both.

BigBlueButton
5.0MEETINGS
BigBlueButton 4.0 rc.5 drops Etherpad and makes BlockNote the only notes editor.
◆ Current state
BigBlueButton 4.0.0-rc.5 removes Etherpad, so upgrading uninstalls bbb-etherpad and bbb-pads and leaves BlockNote as the only shared-notes editor. It also moves Node components to Node.js 24, switches the client to the 1.0 pre-release plugin SDK, and redesigns the poll and quiz panels. It follows two security-only candidates, and the project still recommends 3.0.x for production.
◆ Where it's heading
The 4.0 cycle is removing legacy components one by one: SIP.js audio went in beta.4, and Etherpad goes now. Between the removals, security-only candidates harden the new LiveKit audio and BlockNote notes surfaces. The plugin SDK reaching a 1.0 pre-release suggests the extension API is being frozen for GA.
◆ Prediction
Expect at least one more candidate to settle the plugin SDK 1.0 change and Etherpad removal before 4.0.0 GA. The pace of security advisories makes the exact timing unclear.
Goldcast
2.5MEETINGS
Goldcast is polishing the production booth: stage layouts, audio control, and one brand kit.
◆ Current state
Goldcast runs B2B events and repurposes the recordings through Content Lab.
◆ Where it's heading
The platform is being tuned for output quality rather than reach. Nearly every release improves how the finished artifact looks or sounds: recording accuracy at 1080p with the resolution shown before processing, per-speaker volume, layouts chosen per moment, brand assets applied consistently. The one operational thread running alongside is Salesforce automation, where event templates now clone and link their campaign - a sign the buyer being served is marketing operations, not the producer.
◆ Prediction
Expect the brand asset store to be wired into Content Lab's clip generation, since a stored brand voice has no other obvious use in an events tool.
