What is Balsamiq?

Twenty years of wireframing, now retrofitted around an AI that needs cleaner structure

Balsamiq is midway through a UI modernization it has had to partially walk back. The new toolbar shipped, users pushed back on the missing Properties panel, and this week it returned as an opt-in View-menu toggle that persists across sessions. Underneath that surface churn, the substantive work is on canvas primitives: unified color properties across controls, smart arrows, and a table element that now behaves like a real table with multi-cell selection and markdown editing.

What is Oxygen?

Oxygen 6.2 beta adds an MCP server, making the WordPress page builder AI-agent controllable

Oxygen is deep in the 6.2 beta cycle (now at Beta 8), with the headlining feature being an MCP Server — meaning AI agents can directly drive Oxygen's page builder via the Model Context Protocol. Alongside the beta track, stable releases 6.1.2 and 6.1.3 addressed a security issue in the Design Library import flow and a regression fix. The 4.9.8 RC 1 branch keeps the legacy Classic version compatible with WooCommerce 11.

Twenty years of wireframing, now retrofitted around an AI that needs cleaner structure

◆ Current state

Balsamiq is midway through a UI modernization it has had to partially walk back. The new toolbar shipped, users pushed back on the missing Properties panel, and this week it returned as an opt-in View-menu toggle that persists across sessions. Underneath that surface churn, the substantive work is on canvas primitives: unified color properties across controls, smart arrows, and a table element that now behaves like a real table with multi-cell selection and markdown editing.

◆ Where it's heading

The primitive work is not cosmetic — it is scaffolding for Balsamiq AI. Smart arrows were shipped explicitly to help the AI wrangle prototypes, and pricing was restructured in May around customers who want more AI. That is a product deciding its editor primitives need to be machine-legible before generation can be reliable. Expect the color unification pass to continue on the same logic.

◆ Prediction

The next releases should extend unification to remaining control properties and surface more Balsamiq AI capability against the newly structured elements, with continued reversals wherever the toolbar redesign removed something users relied on.

Oxygen 6.2 beta adds an MCP server, making the WordPress page builder AI-agent controllable

◆ Current state

Oxygen is deep in the 6.2 beta cycle (now at Beta 8), with the headlining feature being an MCP Server — meaning AI agents can directly drive Oxygen's page builder via the Model Context Protocol. Alongside the beta track, stable releases 6.1.2 and 6.1.3 addressed a security issue in the Design Library import flow and a regression fix. The 4.9.8 RC 1 branch keeps the legacy Classic version compatible with WooCommerce 11.

◆ Where it's heading

The MCP Server is the most directional move Oxygen has made in recent history. Once GA, it puts Oxygen in the category of AI-agentic design tools — a page builder that an LLM can compose, edit, or debug programmatically. Beta 3's UI localization signals that international market expansion is happening in the same release, broadening the addressable user base alongside the AI capability.

◆ Prediction

Oxygen 6.2 GA is the immediate next move; the question is whether MCP integration depth expands post-launch to cover template generation, responsive breakpoints, and component discovery — the scenarios where AI-driven page building would actually save time.
