What is Air?

Air opens its asset library to agents that can write, not just search

Air is a creative asset platform whose Canvas surface has spent this year absorbing generative video and image tooling — translation inside an image, video-to-video, smart resize, a growing roster of third-party models. Alongside that it keeps widening how assets get in and out: Figma and FigJam, Premiere Pro, Workato, Canva. Sharing has been productised into Showcases, a branded, permission-controlled page whose feature set is now explicitly tiered by plan. Weekly releases, usually one theme each.

What is SmugMug?

SmugMug is turning a photographer's account into a studio's account.

The two recent entries both target teams rather than solo shooters. Collaborator Logins ends the shared-password arrangement: each team member gets their own credentials and MFA, with permissions that allow uploading and work in the Organizer, Library, Stats, and Contacts while blocking site design changes, private galleries, deletion, and the owner's payment method — and an Activity Log records who did what. Alongside it, the Library gained nestable multi-assign Labels and direct folder uploads. Everything before those two sits nearly a year back and is commerce work: buying from search results, customer leads, pre-release galleries, coupon banners, and a consolidated checkout.

Air opens its asset library to agents that can write, not just search

◆ Current state

Air is a creative asset platform whose Canvas surface has spent this year absorbing generative video and image tooling — translation inside an image, video-to-video, smart resize, a growing roster of third-party models. Alongside that it keeps widening how assets get in and out: Figma and FigJam, Premiere Pro, Workato, Canva. Sharing has been productised into Showcases, a branded, permission-controlled page whose feature set is now explicitly tiered by plan. Weekly releases, usually one theme each.

◆ Where it's heading

Two things are converging. Air is positioning Canvas as the place creative work happens rather than where finished files land, which is why the model roster and editing tools keep growing. And it is making the library machine-addressable: the MCP server that launched read-only in April now has write scopes and a listing in Claude's connector directory. Put together, the bet is that an agent will do the routine library work — filing, tagging, uploading — while people stay in Canvas.

◆ Prediction

Expect the write scopes to pull governance behind them, since an agent that can create boards and upload files into a shared library will need scoped permissions and an audit trail before enterprise customers turn it on.

SmugMug is turning a photographer's account into a studio's account.

◆ Current state

◆ Where it's heading

The older half of this window is about converting gallery visitors into buyers; the newer half is about the business behind the gallery. Permissions, an audit log, and a personal organization layer that collaborators share are the things a one-person account does not need and a studio cannot operate without. The dashboard SmugMug called a first step in 2025 reads as the start of that shift. Publishing is sparse enough that the arc is legible only across quarters.

◆ Prediction

Expect collaborator permissions to get finer — per-gallery or per-client scoping rather than one fixed role — since the current split is a single fixed bundle and the Activity Log implies someone is meant to review it. What the entries do not show is whether Labels will ever surface to clients rather than staying internal.
