What is 3CX?

3CX is opening the PBX to agents while its feed fills with awards and academy news

3CX is a self-hosted business phone system, and its feed mixes real releases with marketing. The releases have been solid and specific: an MCP server for managing the PBX from an AI client, a choice of SendGrid or Zoho for system email, department-level music on hold. Around them sit a G2 badge announcement, an academy launch and a walkthrough for adding a customer service AI agent to an existing setup.

What is BigBlueButton?

BigBlueButton 4.0 is in RC with LiveKit as its new default media stack, replacing SIP.js audio after years of parallel development.

BigBlueButton 4.0 reached its first release candidate after five beta iterations. The defining architectural change is LiveKit replacing the legacy SIP.js audio bridge as the default media stack — a complete audio infrastructure overhaul. BlockNote is now the default shared notes engine with Markdown support. The mobile layout was overhauled in beta.5 with paginated webcams and proper landscape mode. The RC adds multi-room LiveKit sessions with membership-based token refresh and completes the 'LiveKit as audio state source' refactor.

◆ Current state

3CX is a self-hosted business phone system, and its feed mixes real releases with marketing. The releases have been solid and specific: an MCP server for managing the PBX from an AI client, a choice of SendGrid or Zoho for system email, department-level music on hold. Around them sit a G2 badge announcement, an academy launch and a walkthrough for adding a customer service AI agent to an existing setup.

◆ Where it's heading

The AI thread is the one with direction. An MCP server for the PBX makes administration something an assistant performs rather than a console task, and the customer-service agent guide extends the same idea to the call path itself. The rest is steady administrative polish — email provider choice, per-department hold music — which is what a self-hosted product ships between larger moves. The award and academy posts carry no product content and should not be read as cadence.

◆ Prediction

With an MCP server for administration and a documented path for a customer service agent, the obvious gap is the two meeting — call handling driven by the same MCP surface rather than a separately configured agent.

BigBlueButton 4.0 is in RC with LiveKit as its new default media stack, replacing SIP.js audio after years of parallel development.

◆ Current state

BigBlueButton 4.0 reached its first release candidate after five beta iterations. The defining architectural change is LiveKit replacing the legacy SIP.js audio bridge as the default media stack — a complete audio infrastructure overhaul. BlockNote is now the default shared notes engine with Markdown support. The mobile layout was overhauled in beta.5 with paginated webcams and proper landscape mode. The RC adds multi-room LiveKit sessions with membership-based token refresh and completes the 'LiveKit as audio state source' refactor.

◆ Where it's heading

BBB 4.0 is a platform modernization release: LiveKit adoption reduces dependency on the legacy FreeSWITCH/mediasoup audio stack, Java 21 upgrade, and BlockNote adoption for shared notes are all about getting on more modern foundations. The WASM-based audio processor introduced in beta.3 adds real-time audio processing (noise suppression, etc.) directly in the browser without server-side heavy lifting. These changes position BBB 4.0 as significantly more scalable and modern than 3.x.

◆ Prediction

The 4.0 stable release will ship within weeks of the RC. The next development cycle will focus on expanding LiveKit capabilities (more reliable breakout audio, recording improvements) and building on the BlockNote foundation for richer collaborative document features.
