What is Runway AI?

Generative video pioneer pivots from 'we make the model' to 'we are the canvas — bring any model.'

Runway is a generative video and image platform. The last six months executed a strategic pivot: in February, Runway integrated a wide library of third-party models (Kling, WAN2.2 Animate, GPT-Image-1.5, Sora 2 Pro, Nano Banana 2) alongside its own Gen-4.5. In March, it launched Runway Characters — real-time conversational avatars accessible via API. In April, Seedance 2.0 added a multimodal-input video model.

What is Storybook?

The 10.6 alphas are an Angular tooling rebuild wearing a version number.

Storybook is five alphas into 10.6.0, shipping roughly weekly. The dominant thread is Angular: Compodoc parsing extracted into its own package, docgen moved to the server, on-demand Compodoc runs, required inputs derived from Compodoc's own flag, and alias-collision handling corrected. Alongside it, TanStack support keeps getting patched into shape and TypeScript 6.0.3 landed in the first alpha.

◆ Current state

Runway is a generative video and image platform. The last six months executed a strategic pivot: in February, Runway integrated a wide library of third-party models (Kling, WAN2.2 Animate, GPT-Image-1.5, Sora 2 Pro, Nano Banana 2) alongside its own Gen-4.5. In March, it launched Runway Characters — real-time conversational avatars accessible via API. In April, Seedance 2.0 added a multimodal-input video model.

◆ Where it's heading

Runway is repositioning from a model-first studio (Gen-1 through Gen-4.5) to a model-agnostic creation surface where the underlying generator is a user choice. The Workflows-as-Apps layer from December and the API-first launch of Characters both lean further into Runway-as-platform. First-party models still ship — Gen-4.5 added image-to-video conditioning in January — but no longer carry the product alone.

◆ Prediction

Expect agentic editing on top of the multi-model surface, Characters API expansion (likely SDK and webhook support), and continued audio expansion to compose alongside the visual stack.

The 10.6 alphas are an Angular tooling rebuild wearing a version number.

◆ Current state

Storybook is five alphas into 10.6.0, shipping roughly weekly. The dominant thread is Angular: Compodoc parsing extracted into its own package, docgen moved to the server, on-demand Compodoc runs, required inputs derived from Compodoc's own flag, and alias-collision handling corrected. Alongside it, TanStack support keeps getting patched into shape and TypeScript 6.0.3 landed in the first alpha.

◆ Where it's heading

Two rebuilds are running in parallel. The Angular integration is being decomposed — parsing, docgen, and metadata pulled out of the framework adapter and into shared packages, with work moving off the client and onto the server. Separately, a component-metadata layer is forming in core (ComponentMetaManager, manifest component API fields, shared CSF story-shape helpers), which reads like groundwork for tooling that consumes Storybook's metadata rather than its UI. TanStack Start is being treated as a first-class router target rather than an edge case.

◆ Prediction

The Angular extraction looks close to done, so expect the remaining alphas to shift toward stabilizing the manifest and metadata APIs before a 10.6 beta.
