Jitsi Meet Desktop vs JW Player: at a glance
What is Jitsi Meet Desktop?
Jitsi Meet Desktop ships a trust-store fix you can only get by updating the app
Jitsi Meet Desktop releases every month or two, mostly upkeep. 2026.10.0 moves to Electron 43.8.3, which removes trust for the certificate hierarchy behind the October eMudhra intermediate CA compromise; because the app carries its own root store, updating is the only way to get it. It also adds a default-server CLI option and keeps JWTs when opening a meeting window.
What is JW Player?
JW Player moves CMAF VOD into the dashboard, adds AV1, and opens Broadcast Live to audio-only feeds.
JW Player shipped three JWX releases on October 26: CMAF VOD uploads and transcoding from the dashboard, AV1 renditions for CMAF VOD, and audio-only Broadcast Live streams delivered over HLS and DASH. They follow the October 20 DRM monitoring section and October's account-level ad operations and unified live/VOD clipping.

2.5MEETINGS

◆ Current state
Jitsi Meet Desktop releases every month or two, mostly upkeep.
◆ Where it's heading
Since the 2026.6.0 redesign into per-call windows, the app has returned to maintenance: Electron bumps, packaging and small fixes. Its security posture depends on how fast it follows Chromium through Electron.
◆ Prediction
The next release is likely another Electron bump with small fixes, in roughly a month.
JW Player
5.0MEETINGS
JW Player moves CMAF VOD into the dashboard, adds AV1, and opens Broadcast Live to audio-only feeds.
◆ Current state
JW Player shipped three JWX releases on October 26: CMAF VOD uploads and transcoding from the dashboard, AV1 renditions for CMAF VOD, and audio-only Broadcast Live streams delivered over HLS and DASH. They follow the October 20 DRM monitoring section and October's account-level ad operations and unified live/VOD clipping.
◆ Where it's heading
CMAF VOD is moving from an API-first pipeline to the default workflow: re-uploads, captions, dashboard transcoding and now AV1 have arrived one by one since late September. In parallel the JWX dashboard keeps absorbing operations work, and live delivery is widening to formats beyond video.
◆ Prediction
Expect remaining CMAF parity gaps to close and the dashboard upload flow to make CMAF the default; the entries don't show whether Traditional VOD will be retired.
