zarr-python
Zarr's package split keeps producing standalone tools: a server, now a lazy indexer.
A side-by-side editorial comparison of httr and Manticore Search — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
httr's last releases are housekeeping - the package now points users at httr2
httr is in wind-down. The last release with real feature work was 1.4.0 in 2018; everything since is test stabilization, CRAN-driven fixes, and unwinding a dependency on the httpbin service. Version 1.4.7 removed the vignette contents outright and redirects readers to httr2.
Manticore ships per-commit releases; the real news arrives in periodic roll-up notes.
Manticore Search publishes a release entry per merged commit, so the feed reads as a stream of point versions where most entries are single fixes, dependency bumps, or reverts. The substantive picture appears only in the occasional roll-up note — 28.6.6 collected UUID document IDs and ordered, limited GROUP_CONCAT() alongside fixes across replication, backups, and secondary indexes. Recent commits cluster around sharding, KNN tuning, and the Buddy sidecar.

This is a succession, not a decline. The maintainers are keeping httr installable and passing checks for the very large base of packages that depend on it, while all design work happens in httr2. The pattern across these six releases is unambiguous: nothing lands here unless CRAN, a test service, or a platform forced it.
Expect continued patch releases driven only by CRAN checks and toolchain changes; the interesting HTTP work in R will keep landing in httr2.

Sharded tables are steadily gaining the introspection and SQL surface that plain tables already have, with settings retrieval the latest gap closed. KNN work continues on the operational side rather than the algorithmic one — making optimize cutoff behave consistently whether it is set globally or per index. The Buddy component is on its own release train, pulled in via version bumps that each carry a capability, most recently Unix socket support. A UTF-8 table and field name feature was merged by mistake and reverted, so that capability is still pending rather than shipped.
Sharded tables look likely to keep absorbing the remaining SQL introspection statements that plain tables support. The reverted UTF-8 identifier support is the clearest pending item and should return once it lands deliberately.
