Buildkite ships Agent v4 after eight years and lands a VS Code extension, reshaping CI as IDE infrastructure.
Buildkite just completed a major platform reset: Agent v4 removes eight years of deprecated behavior and is now the stable default across hosted, self-hosted, and AWS Elastic CI Stack environments. The same release window delivered a VS Code extension, an expanded MCP server with cluster secrets management and dynamic pipeline introspection, and deeper OpenTelemetry coverage of PR retry patterns. The product is shipping on multiple fronts simultaneously.

The 2.26.0 release was explicitly aimed at functional parity with the archived Volatility 2, landing around twenty plugins at once across Linux, macOS and Windows. Since then the work has shifted from filling gaps to structuring what exists: malware-specific plugins moved under a malware namespace with the old names deprecated, an arrow/parquet output renderer added, volshell given breakpoints, and per-release additions like sockscan, process_spoofing, pebmasquerade and etwpatch.

The VS Code extension brings pipeline management and log streaming into the editor; the MCP server makes pipelines programmable by AI agents; job acquisition tokens harden ephemeral-agent security. Agent v4's clean baseline — stripped of eight years of deprecated shims — is the architectural foundation that enables these integrations without backward-compatibility drag.
The MCP server is the clearest next vector: cluster secrets creation just shipped, pipeline authoring and test analytics tools are the logical follow-on. The VS Code extension will likely gain YAML authoring with real-time validation as the next feature layer.

The plugin catalogue keeps growing on the Linux side in particular — tracing, kallsyms, ftrace, VMA scanning, smearing protection — reflecting where memory forensics currently has the least coverage. And the framework is being made into something other tools consume: structured output formats, a shipped Windows executable, a namespaced plugin taxonomy with a year-long deprecation window. The project is treating plugin names as an interface it owes users stability on.
Expect the malware namespace migration to complete as the deprecated names age out, and the Linux plugin surface to keep taking the bulk of new additions, with output-format work continuing to open the framework to automated pipelines.
