What is Aim?

An experiment tracker grinding on storage performance — and quiet for over a year.

Aim is an open-source ML experiment tracker whose 3.2x line reads almost entirely as storage and indexing work: constant indexing of in-progress runs, reading from a single unified database, fallbacks when the index is missing, stalled-run detection. The user-facing additions in this window are narrow — a read-only UI mode, report creation, self-signed SSL support, PytorchLightning logger contexts. The most recent entry here is from May 2025, making this feed over a year stale.

What is MotherDuck?

MotherDuck is building the governance layer its agent-native pipelines already needed.

The weekly cadence is split between two tracks. One is agent surface: Flights (Python pipelines drivable from SQL, UI, or any MCP client) went from Preview to all plans in six weeks, and Guides now let an organization hand agents its metric definitions and join rules so every session writes SQL against the same semantics. The other is enterprise readiness: RBAC with scoped privileges, Sydney and Tokyo regions, Iceberg read/write against Cloudflare R2 and Databricks, a Postgres wire endpoint that BI tools and dbt Cloud connect to natively.

0.0

An experiment tracker grinding on storage performance — and quiet for over a year.

◆ Current state

Aim is an open-source ML experiment tracker whose 3.2x line reads almost entirely as storage and indexing work: constant indexing of in-progress runs, reading from a single unified database, fallbacks when the index is missing, stalled-run detection. The user-facing additions in this window are narrow — a read-only UI mode, report creation, self-signed SSL support, PytorchLightning logger contexts. The most recent entry here is from May 2025, making this feed over a year stale.

◆ Where it's heading

The direction across these releases is toward making the local storage layer trustworthy at scale rather than expanding what the tracker does. Repeated fixes around index corruption, empty index.db handling, false-positive metric checks, and session refresh point at users hitting durability problems on long-running or high-volume tracking. Integration surface grows only where contributors push it — S3 client config, Lightning contexts, remote mass updates all arrive as outside contributions rather than a planned roadmap.

◆ Prediction

With no release visible in over a year, the honest read is that cadence has stopped rather than shifted; the entries give no signal of a 4.x line or a direction change. If work resumes, the pattern suggests more storage-correctness fixes before any new capability.

MotherDuck is building the governance layer its agent-native pipelines already needed.

◆ Current state

The weekly cadence is split between two tracks. One is agent surface: Flights (Python pipelines drivable from SQL, UI, or any MCP client) went from Preview to all plans in six weeks, and Guides now let an organization hand agents its metric definitions and join rules so every session writes SQL against the same semantics. The other is enterprise readiness: RBAC with scoped privileges, Sydney and Tokyo regions, Iceberg read/write against Cloudflare R2 and Databricks, a Postgres wire endpoint that BI tools and dbt Cloud connect to natively.

◆ Where it's heading

The order is deliberate — ship the agent capability, then the controls that make it deployable. Flights arrived in Preview, reached every plan, gained per-run config overrides and runtime caps, and now Admins get org-wide visibility while edit and delete stay with the creator. Guides is the same move applied to correctness: rather than better prompting, MotherDuck is making organizational context a stored, shareable object agents read automatically. Regional expansion and Iceberg catalog interop suggest the target is a warehouse that sits inside someone else's data estate rather than replacing it.

◆ Prediction

Expect Guides to leave Preview with permissions attached, and the Admin visibility model to extend from viewing Flights to governing them — scheduling limits, ownership transfer, or approval before a Flight runs against production data.
