Free heatmap and session recording tool for website behavior analytics

Microsoft Clarity is turning its free analytics tool into the go-to dashboard for AI search visibility.

Current state
Microsoft Clarity has evolved well beyond heatmaps and session recordings. The last several months have been almost entirely focused on a new product surface: Citations and AI visibility analytics, which track how a site's content appears in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, and similar platforms. By May 2026 Citations hit GA; by July, Topic Insights let teams see which content topics earn AI citation authority; by August, AI crawler behavior could be connected to actual referral sessions. An MCP server also shipped, making Clarity data queryable from LLM contexts.
Where it's heading
Clarity is building a parallel analytics stack alongside its original behavioral tools. The new surface covers AI discoverability (citations, topic authority, scrape-to-referral) while the original product covers behavioral data (heatmaps, sessions, rage clicks). Both remain free, which means Microsoft is building toward being the industry-standard measurement tool for AI-era web presence — before the category is fully defined. The direction points toward unifying both data layers into a single site analytics suite.
Prediction
The next step is likely actionable recommendations from the Citations dashboard — not just monitoring but telling teams what content changes would improve AI citation frequency. The MCP server also sets up AI-agent-driven analytics automation as a near-term product surface.

Understand Which AI Crawlers Drive Real Visits with AI Scrape-to-Referral Insights

    ⚡ SPARK

Scrape-to-Referral Insights connects AI crawler bot activity to actual user sessions that came from AI platforms — closing the loop between 'a bot read my page' and 'a human then visited from an AI answer.' This is the first analytics feature to make AI-driven traffic causally traceable rather than just observable, and represents the most concrete capability in Clarity's AI visibility build-out.

See Branded and Non-Branded AI Queries in the Clarity Citations Dashboard

Segmenting Citations by branded vs. non-branded AI queries adds meaningful analytical depth — knowing whether AI platforms cite you in response to your name versus topical queries reveals the difference between brand recognition and subject-matter authority. This extends the Citations dashboard usefully without changing its underlying model.

Analyze AI Citation Queries by Topic

Topic-level grouping for AI citation queries lets teams see patterns across many queries rather than inspecting each one individually — a usability improvement that makes the Citations dashboard actionable at scale. It fits the broader arc of making AI visibility data useful, not just observable.

Measure How AI Answers Use Your Content with Topic Insights in Microsoft Clarity

    ⚡ SPARK

Topic Insights was a materially new capability: it showed teams which content topics earn citation authority in AI answers, with competitive benchmarking against other cited domains. This moved Clarity from passive citation counting to active content strategy support — a meaningfully different product than its heatmap origins.
