What is ESPHome?

ESPHome 2026.9.0 ships template climate component, OTA encryption with API key, and ESP-NOW for ESP32-P4

ESPHome 2026.9.0 is out, capping a beta cycle that added a template climate component (a long-requested flexible HVAC control primitive), OTA encryption keyed to the device's API key (hardening the update path), and ESP-NOW over hosted shim for the ESP32-P4. The beta cycle also included a systematic RAM allocation safety pass across the codebase — heap exhaustion now returns an error instead of panicking. Monthly releases continue landing at a consistent pace.

What is Umbrel?

umbrelOS 2.0 Beta ships virtualization, iOS/Mac companion apps, multi-user, and MCP server — redefining the personal home server.

umbrelOS 2.0 Beta 1 is Umbrel's biggest release to date. The headline additions: Machines (run Windows, Ubuntu, Debian, Android in a browser via one-click install), iOS and Mac companion apps (automatic camera roll backup, Finder integration), multiple user accounts with per-user private home folders, a built-in MCP server for AI agent access, Storage Manager with FailSafe RAID, GPU passthrough for NVIDIA/AMD/Intel, and cloud storage downloads from Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud, and others. The 1.7.x line is now in maintenance, receiving only security patches (DirtyFrag CVEs, CopyFail CVE).

ESPHome 2026.9.0 ships template climate component, OTA encryption with API key, and ESP-NOW for ESP32-P4

◆ Current state

ESPHome 2026.9.0 is out, capping a beta cycle that added a template climate component (a long-requested flexible HVAC control primitive), OTA encryption keyed to the device's API key (hardening the update path), and ESP-NOW over hosted shim for the ESP32-P4. The beta cycle also included a systematic RAM allocation safety pass across the codebase — heap exhaustion now returns an error instead of panicking. Monthly releases continue landing at a consistent pace.

◆ Where it's heading

ESPHome is expanding in two directions simultaneously: broader hardware support (ESP32-P4, BK72xx BLE, new platform components) and more robust runtime behavior (RAMAllocator pattern, use-after-free fixes, better BLE-WiFi coexistence). The template climate component is the most user-visible addition — it brings custom HVAC logic into ESPHome's declarative model, reducing the need for external Home Assistant automations. Audio stack (i2s, resampler, mixer) reliability is also a consistent focus.

◆ Prediction

The 2026.10.0 cycle will likely continue the RAMAllocator pattern across remaining allocating code paths and add more ESP32-P4-specific features. Audio (voice assistants, speakers) will stay a top area given the ongoing i2s reliability work.

umbrelOS 2.0 Beta ships virtualization, iOS/Mac companion apps, multi-user, and MCP server — redefining the personal home server.

◆ Current state

umbrelOS 2.0 Beta 1 is Umbrel's biggest release to date.

◆ Where it's heading

2.0 is a category expansion, not an iteration. Umbrel started as a personal Bitcoin node host, broadened to a privacy-focused app server, and is now positioning as a full personal home server OS — with virtualization, AI agent integration, and first-party client apps. The MCP server is particularly telling: it makes an Umbrel unit a computer an AI agent can use, not just a server a human visits.

◆ Prediction

2.0 will ship final with Google Drive support (explicitly flagged as coming soon). The MCP server will expand its permission model and more apps will expose MCP-compatible interfaces. The companion apps will gain remote access features beyond Tailscale.
