SRS shipped the stable 6.0 line's first release on 12 August and, three hours later, the first development build of 7.0. The 6.0 line is now in pure maintenance — the r1 changelog is seven merges of DVR, WebRTC and edge fixes. Everything new is in 7.0-d0: RTSP playback, RTMPS, IPv6 across every protocol, HEVC in both directions between RTMP and WebRTC, and HLS fMP4 segments for HEVC and LL-HLS.

What is Wowza?

Wowza is rebuilding around one idea: run computer vision inside the streaming pipeline.

Wowza's feed is a marketing blog, not a changelog — every entry is a short teaser ending in an ellipsis, with the substance behind the link. Read for direction rather than scope, it is almost entirely about the Video Intelligence Framework: object detection, scene analysis, vision-language models, synthetic video detection, and custom model support, all running on the same media server that ingests and delivers the stream. The project is trading breadth of legacy surface for a narrower, better-covered core. 7.0-d0 removes the embedded GB28181 SIP server, multi-threading, Cygwin, and most configuration hot reload, while introducing a Go proxy server and origin-cluster architecture alongside the C++ media core. Protocol coverage keeps generalizing — each release makes a codec or an address family a property of the server rather than of one delivery path.

◆ Prediction

Expect the 7.0 line to run a long alpha and beta train the way 6.0 did, with the Go proxy and origin clustering carrying most of the remaining work and 6.0 continuing to receive backported fixes in parallel.

◆ Where it's heading

Wowza is repositioning from media server to inference point, and the marketing has shifted from explaining the idea to proving it. The earlier posts argued that analysis belongs inside the pipeline rather than in a second system downstream; the recent ones supply a named deployment — Oceaneering running VIF on live subsea ROV video — and press the installed base still on Streaming Engine 4.8 to upgrade. A reference account and upgrade pressure arriving together is what a vendor does when it is converting an existing base rather than chasing new ones.

◆ Prediction

With a named customer now published and upgrade pressure already applied, expect more vertical case studies in industrial and infrastructure monitoring rather than new VIF capability announcements. The teaser-only feed will not reveal VIF pricing or packaging.
