The 8.7 train front-loaded AI Search and server-side OAuth, then coasted through five quiet RCs.
Rocket.Chat is mid-flight on the 8.7.0 release-candidate train, and effectively all of the substance landed in rc.0: AI Search with semantic message results and optional OpenAI-compatible answers, a rebuilt server-side OAuth flow with PKCE and state validation, FIPS-compliant crypto across the monolith and every microservice, and an alternative Node runtime for the Apps Engine. The five candidates since then are version bumps plus a single audio-seek fix. The 8.6 line ahead of it followed the same shape, with a unified presence engine appearing in its own rc.0.

Two threads are pulling in the same direction: making self-hosted Rocket.Chat defensible in regulated environments, and giving it an AI surface of its own. FIPS mode is gated behind a new licensed module, and AI Search arrives with an 'AI Center' configuration area rather than as a bolted-on setting — both signal features built to be sold into compliance-bound buyers. The OAuth rework moving token handling fully server-side, behind an opt-in Accounts_OAuth_Use_Modern_Flow toggle, is the same instinct applied to authentication.
◆ Prediction
Expect 8.7.0 to reach GA with the rc.0 feature set essentially unchanged, since five candidates have added no new capability. The AI Center is the thing to watch: it was introduced as configuration scaffolding, which usually means more AI features are queued to plug into it.

Kagi is separating what used to be one subscription into distinct products with distinct surfaces: a search index other people can query, an assistant that lives on a phone, and a search page where the AI layer is optional. The through-line is user control — preferences that follow the API key, widgets that can be switched off individually, threads that can be exported or deleted in bulk — which is the one thing an ad-funded competitor cannot match on. Growth now depends on those surfaces rather than on convincing people to change their default search engine.
◆ Prediction
The Search API is the piece with launch details still outstanding, so expect it to leave preview with firm pricing and the beta users migrated; the mobile Assistant is described as a first step, which points to the missing platform features arriving next.
