What is Zed?

Zed ships weekly on two tracks: a widening BYO-model matrix and Git tooling that keeps deepening.

Zed is on a strict weekly stable cadence, with 1.9 through 1.13.1 landing across five weeks and patch releases slotted in between for model support. Git is where the feature weight sits: dedicated staged and unstaged multibuffers with hunk-level stage, unstage, and restore, Git Graph column configuration, branch-picker filtering and grouping, and blame controls in the gutter. The other half of every release is the model and agent surface, which absorbed Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5, Fable 5, GPT 5.6 variants, Grok 4.3 and GPT-5.5 via native Bedrock Mantle support, and llama.cpp as a local provider.

The security work has shifted from patching dependencies to changing default behavior — 3.13.0 stops forwarding Authorization headers, basic auth, bearer tokens, OAuth2, and configured headers when a redirect crosses hosts, which touches scraping, remote read and write, alerting, and service discovery alike. That is the project trading silent convenience for a safe default, and it is the kind of change an LTS is deliberately timed around. Alongside it, the experimental PromQL surface keeps churning: duration functions were renamed inside the RC window, and the start-timestamp family is still gated behind flags.

◆ Prediction

Expect the 3.13 line to keep taking small patch releases while 3.5.x receives security-only backports toward end of life. The experimental PromQL work — start timestamps and duration expressions — is the most likely candidate to either stabilize or get renamed again in the next minor.

The provider work has no visible ceiling — Zed is treating model access as a matrix to fill rather than a bet to place, adding endpoints as fast as vendors expose them and deprecating modes like Fast Mode for older Opus versions when they stop mattering. The ACP work alongside it means third-party agents run in the editor on the same footing as Zed's own, so the agent panel is becoming a host rather than a product. Meanwhile the changelog itself shows where the throughput comes from: nearly every line carries an external contributor credit under the Zed Guild banner.

◆ Prediction

Expect the weekly cadence to continue with new model endpoints arriving as patch releases within days of vendor availability, and the Git panel to keep converging on what a dedicated Git client offers. Whether the ACP external-agent surface gains capability beyond configuration and session handling is not yet visible in these entries.
