What is PlanetScale?

PlanetScale is giving Postgres users budgets, guardrails, and a read-only door for agents.

The changelog is dominated by Postgres reaching parity with, and then past, the Vitess side of the platform. Database Traffic Control introduced resource budgets for query traffic, with warning thresholds before enforced budgets bite; storage became configurable at database creation; the vectorscale extension landed; and a new GCP region opened in Eemshaven. Query Insights gained negated search terms across both engines, and an Insights-only variant of the MCP server shipped without query execution tools.

What is Pressable?

Pressable is shipping near-daily, and MCP is being maintained as a peer surface to its API.

Six feature releases in five days. Two add bulk operations — installing and deleting themes, installing and activating or deactivating plugins across sites. The others cover AI Assistant collaborator management, WordPress beta version selection, global MCP token revocation, and site creator attributes exposed across the dashboard, the API and MCP together. Entry bodies are empty in the feed, so scope has to be read from titles.

PlanetScale is giving Postgres users budgets, guardrails, and a read-only door for agents.

◆ Current state

The changelog is dominated by Postgres reaching parity with, and then past, the Vitess side of the platform. Database Traffic Control introduced resource budgets for query traffic, with warning thresholds before enforced budgets bite; storage became configurable at database creation; the vectorscale extension landed; and a new GCP region opened in Eemshaven. Query Insights gained negated search terms across both engines, and an Insights-only variant of the MCP server shipped without query execution tools.

◆ Where it's heading

PlanetScale is building the operational controls that decide whether a managed database is safe to hand to a large team. Traffic budgets, warning thresholds, storage checks before deploy requests and connection-level guardrails all address the same failure mode: one workload consuming the cluster. The Insights-only MCP variant applies that instinct to agents — give them observability and schema recommendations, withhold the ability to execute queries.

◆ Prediction

Expect Traffic Control to gain more granularity and for the Postgres offering to keep closing extension and region gaps. The scoped MCP server suggests further work on what agents are allowed to do rather than simply exposing more of the platform to them.

Entry bodies are empty in the feed, so scope has to be read from titles.

◆ Where it's heading

Two things stand out. Bulk operations across themes and plugins are what a host ships when customers manage fleets of sites rather than one, and they are the prerequisite for an agent doing the same work. Separately, MCP is not being treated as an add-on: new attributes ship to dashboard, API and MCP in the same release, and MCP tokens got a global revocation control — which is a host acknowledging that agent credentials need their own kill switch.

◆ Prediction

Expect more surfaces to ship to dashboard, API and MCP simultaneously, and further agent-credential controls alongside the AI Assistant work.
