What is Plane?

Plane is quietly turning its project tracker into a place you build and publish agents from.

The last four months have added an AI layer at every level of the product: an AI Block that drafts and rewrites inside any Page, PQL — Plane's query language — usable in dashboards, in widget filters and live inside AI chat, the ability to publish MCP applications from Plane, and now Skills, which save and reuse instructions in Plane AI. Around that sits ordinary tracker work: epics promoted to a real work item type, shared dashboards, Bitbucket Cloud and Data Center, Mermaid diagrams in Pages, audit logs, and a redesigned two-layer permissions model with custom roles.

What is Tracecat?

After a mandatory Action Gateway, the RC train is back to hardening the sandbox

beta.51 landed on 10 August carrying a breaking change — the Action Gateway is now mandatory — alongside an AI security architecture and GitHub, GitLab and MISP template catalogs. The two beta.52 release candidates since are narrower: sandbox job-tree cleanup, registry sync phases, a shared manifest cache, audit webhook tests, and a linked-row cap raised to 5,000.

Plane is quietly turning its project tracker into a place you build and publish agents from.

◆ Current state

The last four months have added an AI layer at every level of the product: an AI Block that drafts and rewrites inside any Page, PQL — Plane's query language — usable in dashboards, in widget filters and live inside AI chat, the ability to publish MCP applications from Plane, and now Skills, which save and reuse instructions in Plane AI. Around that sits ordinary tracker work: epics promoted to a real work item type, shared dashboards, Bitbucket Cloud and Data Center, Mermaid diagrams in Pages, audit logs, and a redesigned two-layer permissions model with custom roles.

◆ Where it's heading

The direction is an agent surface built on top of a structured work graph rather than a chat box bolted onto a tracker. PQL is the connective tissue — the same query language answers a dashboard widget and an AI question, so the agent reads the same data model the user does. Skills and publishable MCP apps then let that behaviour be saved and shared instead of re-prompted, which is what turns a feature into a platform.

◆ Prediction

Skills and MCP publishing are both packaging mechanisms shipped within two months of each other, so the gap they leave is distribution — somewhere to find and install what other teams have built. Whether Plane fills it is not indicated by these entries.

After a mandatory Action Gateway, the RC train is back to hardening the sandbox

◆ Current state

beta.51 landed on 10 August carrying a breaking change — the Action Gateway is now mandatory — alongside an AI security architecture and GitHub, GitLab and MISP template catalogs. The two beta.52 release candidates since are narrower: sandbox job-tree cleanup, registry sync phases, a shared manifest cache, audit webhook tests, and a linked-row cap raised to 5,000.

◆ Where it's heading

The work splits between security isolation and agent surface. Sandbox ownership, credential storage, keyring rotation and execution scoping recur release after release, while the agent side grows in small increments such as mention autocomplete in case comments. Integration coverage arrives as YAML template catalogs rather than bespoke code, which keeps breadth cheap while the runtime stays locked down.

◆ Prediction

Expect beta.52 to ship as a cumulative release restating these RC changes; on the beta.51 pattern, its notes rather than any individual candidate will be where a directional change is visible.
