Mamba vs Manticore Search

Manticore shipped a landmark 29.9.0 release (multi-vector auto-embeddings, chunked document search, float_vector_array, mmap columnar attributes by default, authenticated S3 backups) and is now in a rapid patch cycle addressing edge cases that emerged with the new features. The deadlock fix in concurrent BERT auto-embeddings and the geopoly float type fix are correctness issues that production workloads would hit. Plain table freeze (29.11.0) is the first new capability since 29.9.0.

Manticore is working through the reliability tail of a major feature release — the expected pattern after shipping chunked embeddings and multi-vector storage. The freeze feature for plain tables is incremental but consistent with the direction: give operators more control over read-heavy workloads without schema changes. Once the 29.9.0 features stabilize, the next wave will likely expand chunking strategies and add query-time reranking for hybrid search results.

More chunking and embedding configuration options will follow as early adopters push against the current limits. Expect explicit reranking support for hybrid (vector + full-text) search results as the most requested missing piece for RAG pipelines.
