What is Grafana Loki?

Loki 4.0 RC strips out legacy storage backends and the simple scalable mode.

Loki 4.0.0-rc.2 is out, the first major-version candidate in the feed. It removes the BoltDB, Cassandra, DynamoDB, BigTable and gRPC storage backends, drops Simple Scalable Deployment targets, defaults to Thanos storage clients and adds label-based access control. The Operator had prepared for this: 0.12 already made storage schemas explicit and stopped reconciling deprecated BoltDB schemas.

What is Pinpoint?

Pinpoint 4.0 takes OpenTelemetry traces without its agent; 3.1.1 tames reactive overhead.

Pinpoint, the open-source APM, opened its 4.0 line on 29 October: services on by default, OpenTelemetry traces ingested without the Pinpoint agent, and service-based alarms. A month earlier, 3.1.1 cut agent overhead on Reactor, WebFlux and Kotlin coroutine workloads, added Spring Framework 7 compatibility and hardened the Web and Batch modules, with no schema changes.

6.3

Loki 4.0 RC strips out legacy storage backends and the simple scalable mode.

◆ Current state

Loki 4.0.0-rc.2 is out, the first major-version candidate in the feed. It removes the BoltDB, Cassandra, DynamoDB, BigTable and gRPC storage backends, drops Simple Scalable Deployment targets, defaults to Thanos storage clients and adds label-based access control. The Operator had prepared for this: 0.12 already made storage schemas explicit and stopped reconciling deprecated BoltDB schemas.

◆ Where it's heading

Loki is narrowing to one storage path, TSDB on object storage, and cutting configuration it has carried for years. Query-tee changes and the unplugged V2 engine show the query layer is also being reworked. Operators on older backends or SSD layouts face a real migration.

◆ Prediction

More 4.0 release candidates are likely before a final 4.0.0, followed by a Helm chart and Operator release aligned to it.

ANALYTICS
3.8

Pinpoint 4.0 takes OpenTelemetry traces without its agent; 3.1.1 tames reactive overhead.

◆ Current state

Pinpoint, the open-source APM, opened its 4.0 line on 29 October: services on by default, OpenTelemetry traces ingested without the Pinpoint agent, and service-based alarms. A month earlier, 3.1.1 cut agent overhead on Reactor, WebFlux and Kotlin coroutine workloads, added Spring Framework 7 compatibility and hardened the Web and Batch modules, with no schema changes.

◆ Where it's heading

Pinpoint is loosening the tie between its backend and its own Java agent, which widens who can send it data. The 3.x line keeps the agent fast on modern reactive stacks while 4.0 takes the platform changes, the same split between rare structural jumps and steady patch work seen across 3.0 and 3.1.

◆ Prediction

Expect 4.0.x patches settling OpenTelemetry ingest and the services model, with 3.1.x receiving backports in parallel as 3.0.x did after 3.1.0.
