A side-by-side editorial comparison of googledrive and Hive — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
googledrive has spent six years absorbing Google's changes rather than making its own
googledrive wraps the Drive API for R, and its two structural releases were both reactions to external change: 1.0.0 moved authentication out to gargle, and 2.0.0 adopted Drive's shared-drives rebrand and the single-parent file model with shortcuts. The 2.1.x line since has been service-account impersonation, a scopes helper, retry routing, and markdown-to-Google-Doc conversion.
Governance and cross-workspace plumbing, not new AI surface
August's batch is administrative: approval rounds and stages can be locked against edits, action cards can hide apps and areas per action, and status libraries filter by project. Managed Jira actions now move through transitions from List View with Jira still the source of truth. My Actions spans workspaces, and notifications carry comments and reactions.

The package is stable by design — the 1.0.0 notes said as much, citing two years on CRAN with little need for change — and its release triggers come from Google's platform and from gargle's interface, not from new ideas here. Recent additions are narrow conveniences that make specific workflows possible rather than reshaping the API surface.
Expect the next release to track whatever gargle changes about auth or retries, plus incremental format-conversion support; the entries show no independent roadmap.

Hive is hardening what it already shipped rather than opening new ground. Permissions around approvals, less clutter on action cards, and tighter two-way Jira sync all read as preparation for larger multi-team deployments, where a workflow has to survive many editors. The AI work that dominated July — Buzz sub-tasks, AI Proofing — is absent from this window.
Expect more admin-scoped controls around approvals and templates, plus continued Jira parity work; on the evidence here the next Buzz change is likelier to be scoping and permissions than a new capability.
