What is GitHub?

GitHub previews a package firewall that blocks malicious dependencies at install time.

GitHub put a package firewall into public preview, aimed at malware that steals credentials on CI hosts and developer machines during package installation. The same day brought supply-chain plumbing around it: Dependabot support for npm 12, pnpm 11 and 12 and Bun 1.4, dependency versions in the Dependabot alerts REST API, secret scanning audit-log changes due November 12, and one-click conversion of a repository's branch protections to rulesets. The day before, Copilot model policy moved to REST endpoints for enterprises, teams and organizations.

What is Hatchet?

Hatchet is shipping engine patches almost daily as it opens the scheduler to outside operators.

Hatchet is a task orchestration engine with durable execution, DAGs, cron and rate limits, shipped as a fast-moving open-source release train. In three days it cut seven engine releases, most of them narrow fixes to the DAG operator, durable waits, error passthrough and the cron ticker. The Python SDK keeps pace with flow-control features.

◆ Current state

GitHub put a package firewall into public preview, aimed at malware that steals credentials on CI hosts and developer machines during package installation. The same day brought supply-chain plumbing around it: Dependabot support for npm 12, pnpm 11 and 12 and Bun 1.4, dependency versions in the Dependabot alerts REST API, secret scanning audit-log changes due November 12, and one-click conversion of a repository's branch protections to rulesets. The day before, Copilot model policy moved to REST endpoints for enterprises, teams and organizations.

◆ Where it's heading

GitHub is moving security earlier in the pipeline, from scanning code that is already merged to stopping bad packages before they run. Alongside that, more governance is exposed through APIs and rulesets so enterprises can script policy instead of clicking through settings, for Copilot models and for repository protection alike.

◆ Prediction

Expect the package firewall to gain ecosystem coverage and admin policy controls during preview, and more legacy branch protection users to be pushed toward rulesets. The entries don't show pricing or a GA date for the firewall.

◆ Current state

In three days it cut seven engine releases, most of them narrow fixes to the DAG operator, durable waits, error passthrough and the cron ticker. The Python SDK keeps pace with flow-control features.

◆ Where it's heading

The 0.113.0 serverless operator, a gRPC service that lets operators run outside the engine, set the direction: Hatchet is turning its scheduler into a platform that external runtimes plug into. The patches since then harden that path, especially durable streams and DAG output handling, and add finer flow control such as pausing rate-limited queues.

◆ Prediction

Expect more durable-stream and operator fixes in the 0.113–0.114 line, followed by SDK support that makes out-of-process operators usable without hand-written gRPC.
