A side-by-side editorial comparison of Element and Signal — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Element ships MatrixRTC calls and starts moving its web client onto Rust.
October was Element's busiest stretch in this window. MatrixRTC, a decentralised, end-to-end encrypted multiparty call protocol, arrived; five public sector organisations showed cross-border federation at the Matrix Conference; and openDesk now deploys Element Server Suite directly from Element. Element Web has also started moving to the Matrix Rust SDK, one component at a time.
Signal brings Secure Backups to every platform and starts automating key verification.
Signal Secure Backups improvements are now available on all platforms with iOS 8.30, a year after the feature's introduction. Android 8.20 and iOS 8.22 extended linked devices to Android phones, Android tablets and iPhones. Automatic key verification now complements safety numbers as a simpler way to confirm no unexpected party sits in a session.

Element is closing the gaps between sovereign messaging and the tools it wants to replace. Calls were a large remaining hole, and Open Productivity, a joint venture with other openDesk vendors, adds a commercial route to businesses and critical infrastructure operators. The web migration brings the desktop client onto the same base as Element X.
Expect more government deployments built on the federation demo, and steady Element Web components moving to shared code. The incremental approach means no single release will mark the switch to Rust.

The earlier alternation between protocol work and feature catch-up has narrowed into one theme: making multi-device life safe without asking users to do anything difficult. Backups, linked devices and automatic verification each remove a manual step or a reason to leave.
The entries are teasers and do not point to a specific next feature. Further multi-device polish looks most likely, since that is where the last three posts landed.
