A side-by-side editorial comparison of Docling and Recall — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Docling now swaps broken PDF text layers for OCR and limits what hostile files can consume
Docling keeps releasing every few days, and late October brought three kinds of change. Quality: broken PDF text layers are replaced with OCR, RapidOCR detects page orientation, and a heading style signal runs without generating parsed pages. Reach: mixed-format ZIP inputs and transformers and MLX presets for the ASR pipelines. Safety: 2.142.1 limits decompressed archive members and decoded image pixels, bounds several parsers, and requires trusted input for Tectonic TikZ rendering.
Recall widens what enters the library: EPUB books, image sets and 1,000-link CSV imports.
September brought large intake additions: EPUB books become cards you can read, search and chat with, several photos can form one card, text inside social-post images is read, and a CSV import takes up to 1,000 links at a time from Raindrop, Instapaper or a spreadsheet. Chat answers can now be saved to a new or existing card. The 9 October release turned to a faster home page for large libraries and fuller saves from LinkedIn, Reddit, X and Threads.

As the format list has filled out, the work has turned to what happens when input is bad or malicious. The 2.142.1 hardening set reads like a response to treating documents as untrusted input, and it sits beside bounds on untrusted model output. Speech is also becoming a real pipeline, with presets, offline operation and hallucination controls. VLM mappers such as Chandra and Nemotron keep getting format-level fixes, which suggests those backends are in routine use.
Expect more decode and parser limits, since the hardening touched many backends at once, and ASR presets to keep widening. The weekly-or-faster minor cadence shows no sign of slowing.

The input side keeps widening, with books the largest new source and CSV import aimed at people arriving from read-it-later tools. As libraries grow, the work shifts toward keeping them fast and saves complete, which is most of October's release. Chat output flowing back into cards turns answers into library content.
Expect more performance and capture fixes as bulk import raises library sizes. Video is the most visible gap, since the September notes say OCR on social posts doesn't cover it yet.
