A side-by-side editorial comparison of AutoGPT and Docling — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
AutoGPT puts an approval layer between its agents and the outside world
AutoGPT's platform now ships a minor version every week or two, and the work since September centres on control: AutoPilot gating modes (Ask First, Auto, Unsupervised), every block declaring its effect so cheap outward actions run and costly ones ask, and reads that carry instructions held for the user. v0.10.0 adds External API v2, deprecates v1 with a 2027-01-31 cut-off, and makes self-hosted Docker Compose generate its own service passwords and bind data ports to localhost.
Docling now swaps broken PDF text layers for OCR and limits what hostile files can consume
Docling keeps releasing every few days, and late October brought three kinds of change. Quality: broken PDF text layers are replaced with OCR, RapidOCR detects page orientation, and a heading style signal runs without generating parsed pages. Reach: mixed-format ZIP inputs and transformers and MLX presets for the ASR pipelines. Safety: 2.142.1 limits decompressed archive members and decoded image pixels, bounds several parsers, and requires trusted input for Tectonic TikZ rendering.

The product is converging on a hosted 'hire an expert' assistant with metered budgets, chat-platform delivery (Discord, Slack, Teams, Telegram) and approval cards wherever the chat lives. Self-hosting is being hardened in parallel, with secrets generated per install rather than shipped as defaults.
Expect v1 API holders to be pushed toward v2 in the next releases, alongside more catalog additions (models, MCP servers) and further work on budget and approval UX.

As the format list has filled out, the work has turned to what happens when input is bad or malicious. The 2.142.1 hardening set reads like a response to treating documents as untrusted input, and it sits beside bounds on untrusted model output. Speech is also becoming a real pipeline, with presets, offline operation and hallucination controls. VLM mappers such as Chandra and Nemotron keep getting format-level fixes, which suggests those backends are in routine use.
Expect more decode and parser limits, since the hardening touched many backends at once, and ASR presets to keep widening. The weekly-or-faster minor cadence shows no sign of slowing.
