A side-by-side editorial comparison of Dify and Docling — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Dify 1.19 traces workflows layer by layer, down to the LLM calls inside nested tools.
Dify 1.19.0 sends nested workflow traces to external observability tools: steps inside called Workflow Tools now appear beneath the span that invoked them, with prompts, responses and token usage attached. It also makes Workflow Tools portable inside App packages, adds Skill Hub automation and easier Agent file uploads. It follows 1.18.0, which let an Agent node pick the next workflow branch and introduced the .ifpkg package and difyctl CLI.
Docling adds three more OCR model presets and keeps fixing format edge cases.
Docling keeps releasing every few days. Late October improved PDF quality, with broken text layers replaced by OCR and page orientation detection in RapidOCR, and hardened parsers against hostile files. 2.146.0 on November 3 adds presets for Unlimited-OCR 2, LightOnOCR-3 with grounded output and a guarded multi-pass Nemotron 3.5 parser, along with fixes across Markdown, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, iWork and AsciiDoc.

After several releases that made agents act inside workflows, Dify is now making that behaviour inspectable and portable. Tracing nested calls and packaging tools with apps are what teams need before trusting agent-routed workflows in production.
Expect more observability and evaluation work around agent decisions, such as tracing why an Agent chose a route. Packaging will likely extend to more component types as .ifpkg becomes the deployment unit.

Docling acts as a hub for document vision models: every few releases add presets for a new OCR or VLM parser, from Nemotron-3.5-Parse in October to three more in November. Alongside, it widens inputs (ASR, ZIPs, iWork, AFP) and fixes long-tail format bugs, which suggests users run it on large, mixed document sets.
More VLM and OCR presets will follow at the same pace, likely with more grounded output that ties text to page positions. Format-specific fixes for Office and iWork files will continue in each release.
