A side-by-side editorial comparison of BorgBackup and Traefik — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Borg 2.0 beta 25 breaks repositories to swap its hash and repository format.
BorgBackup's 2.0 beta line is still making breaking format changes. Beta 25 requires new repositories: it moves store object names to blake3, replaces several repository objects with an ini-style config, removes the none-sha256 and none-blake3 modes in favor of authenticated ones, and protects lock, index and cache objects with the repository key. The stable 1.4 line remains the production track.
Traefik v3.8 rc.1 is a Gateway API release; v2.11 keeps getting security patches.
Traefik runs two lines. v3.8.0-rc.1 (2026-10-30) is mostly Kubernetes Gateway API work: ListenerSet support, client certificate validation, backend TLS policy for gRPC and TLSRoute, and TCPRoute consumed through its v1 version with Gateway API v1.5.x support dropped. It also adds per-router responding timeouts and an ACME option to reuse private keys. The v2.11 line keeps weekly-to-biweekly patches: 2.11.61 adds an entry-point limit on request header values and fixes a backend connection leak for NTLM and Kerberos.

Twenty-five betas in, the format is not settled, but this beta is decisive: it removes old modes and object types, which narrows what 2.0 has to support. Treating lock and cache objects as keyed data also extends the security model beyond archive contents.
Further betas are likely to keep requiring new repositories until the format freezes, so a release candidate should not be assumed soon. The 1.4 line stays the safe choice until then.

Feature work sits entirely on v3, and Gateway API is its center: the release tracks upstream versions and drops older ones, so Traefik is betting on Gateway API as its main Kubernetes interface. v2.11 is a security branch; five advisories in 2.11.58 and a CVE in 2.11.60 show it still gets real fixes.
Further 3.8 release candidates and then a final 3.8.0 are the likely next steps, with v2.11 patches continuing in parallel.
