What is Bonsai?

Bonsai is assembling a real CRM underneath the freelancer billing tools

Bonsai's recent work is system-of-record plumbing: a Notes section spanning contacts, companies and projects, an activity feed per company, and Gmail/Microsoft sync that files email and calendar events against the right record. Alongside it sit a self-serve API key and an MCP connector. Billing is no longer the centre of gravity.

What is Rize?

Rize made passive time tracking something you can query in English - and now invoice from.

Rize spent late May turning its time data into a queryable surface: MCP chat inside the app, a Slack agent, and profitability and event tools on the API. June and July then went to hardening - Windows and macOS performance, black-screen recovery, reliable auto-updates, settings sync across machines. This month it added invoicing, generating billable line items out of time the user never manually logged.

Bonsai vs Rize: editorial side-by-side

B5.0

Bonsai is assembling a real CRM underneath the freelancer billing tools

◆ Current state

Bonsai's recent work is system-of-record plumbing: a Notes section spanning contacts, companies and projects, an activity feed per company, and Gmail/Microsoft sync that files email and calendar events against the right record. Alongside it sit a self-serve API key and an MCP connector. Billing is no longer the centre of gravity.

◆ Where it's heading

The pieces landing are the ones a CRM needs before it can be trusted as the single place client history lives — cross-record linking, per-object permissions, automatic contact capture. The API and MCP connector point the same data outward, reachable from outside the app. Documents was rebuilt on that footing, folding proposals and contracts into one editor.

◆ Prediction

Expect the per-object permissions introduced with Notes to spread to the other record types, and the API surface to widen now that a key can be generated self-serve.

R6.3

Rize made passive time tracking something you can query in English - and now invoice from.

◆ Current state

Rize spent late May turning its time data into a queryable surface: MCP chat inside the app, a Slack agent, and profitability and event tools on the API. June and July then went to hardening - Windows and macOS performance, black-screen recovery, reliable auto-updates, settings sync across machines. This month it added invoicing, generating billable line items out of time the user never manually logged.

◆ Where it's heading

The through-line is that automatically captured time is only worth anything if you can interrogate it and bill from it, and Rize is building both ends. The AI work is not a chat widget bolted on the side: profitability and utilization are exposed as tools an assistant can call, which is what makes the Slack agent and in-app chat useful rather than decorative. Invoicing closes the loop from passive capture to payment recorded.

◆ Prediction

The obvious next step is wiring invoicing to payment rails and recurring billing, since the current flow stops at a PDF and manually recorded payments. Extending the MCP tool surface to cover invoices and revenue would follow the pattern the profitability tools already set.
