Video platforms spent the week deleting legacy paths: Etherpad, FreeSWITCH bridges and MatrixRTC legacy mode are gone.
The week in video-conferencing
The week was about subtraction. BigBlueButton and Element Call each removed a legacy component that had stayed alive through a migration, and users on old clients or old plugins must move.
Leaders
BigBlueButton 4.0 has now removed Etherpad in rc.5, making BlockNote the only shared-notes editor, after rc.1 completed the LiveKit audio migration and dropped the legacy FreeSWITCH bridge. In between, rc.4 was a security-only candidate fixing command injection, unauthenticated audio access and shared-notes exposure.
Element Call removed MatrixRTC legacy mode entirely in v0.25.0-rc.1, so any client that has not migrated can no longer join sessions. A later release brought a quick audio menu and a bell reaction sound, which marks the turn back to in-call ergonomics.
JW Player now manages CMAF VOD captions and subtitles through the same text-track endpoints as Traditional VOD, the fourth CMAF parity release since August. Seek thumbnails for CMAF VOD now scale with video duration.
Restream is extending past the stream: webinar registrations export as leads, Clips can start from a public YouTube link, and Studio overlays position freely.
Wildcards
HOMER is a SIP capture stack on DuckDB, and its relevant fix stops in-process SQLite from corrupting the live catalog while honouring the compaction row-group limit. It is storage-safety work in a sector that rarely mentions it.
Themes that compounded
- Legacy path removal at BigBlueButton and Element Call.
- Parity work between pipelines at JW Player, one workflow at a time.
- Participant-side polish at Fourwaves, with email alerts for unread direct messages and a timezone fix for exports.
- Suite-wide version trains at YuJa, pulling products deeper into the LMS.
Watch this week
BigBlueButton's 4.0 cycle has been removing one legacy component per candidate, so watch whether another follows rc.5 or the line moves to a final. At JW Player, SSAI ad optimization is still in beta; a move out of beta would be the monetisation signal.
