Workflow tools are metering their AI assistants and routing models automatically.
The week in marketing automation
Automation platforms are treating AI as a metered resource. One product picks the model per task so users do not, another sells credit top-ups for its assistant, and a third opened an MCP registry inside the assistant. Cost control and model choice are now product features.
Underneath, the open-source workflow engines spent the week on worker stability.
Leaders
Gumloop introduced a model router, an Auto mode on every agent that picks the model for each task. It also revamped the Agent Builder and added per-trigger model choice, password-protected artifacts and credit savings. New frontier models arrive in Gumloop within days of release.
n8n added Assistant onboarding and credit top-ups in 2.41.4 and opened an MCP Registry inside the Assistant in 2.42.0. It maintains three release lines in parallel, and nearly every other entry is a backported reliability fix for queue mode, the task runner or OpenTelemetry export.
Postiz shipped version 2.25 with threaded comments on post previews, a self-hosted MCP connector, a responsive layout pass and more than 50 provider fixes. Releases come roughly every two months, so this one carries more than usual.
Themes that compounded
- Credits and spend appeared at n8n and Gumloop.
- MCP reached publishing and workflow engines at Postiz and n8n.
- Worker hotfixes continued at Activepieces, now across four version lines.
- Security patches landed at Pimcore, whose 2026.2.12 closed a code-generation remote execution advisory and a video cross-site scripting advisory.
- Daily polish continued at Buttondown, which added free-only blocks inside lists.
Watch this week
Watch whether n8n extends credits beyond the Assistant, and whether Gumloop's router adds spend limits, since it shipped credit savings in the same stretch. Activepieces is likely to ship further worker hotfixes on the evidence of its 0.91 line.
