Assistants became agent runtimes: Copilot got a sandbox, Claude finished a model family, LobeHub got hands.
The week in ai-assistants
The dominant pattern is containment and reach at once. Agents are being given more places to run, on the desktop, in the terminal and in managed infrastructure, and they are being given sandboxes and admin controls to run there safely.
Leaders
GitHub Copilot took local sandboxing to GA across the CLI, the Copilot app and the VS Code Agent Host, and made Claude Haiku 5.5 GA as the fast tier for subagents. JetBrains users gained control over the default model and MCP servers, and a purpose-built secret-detection model arrived for code agents write.
Claude completed its 5.5 family with Haiku 5.5 on October 7, after Opus on September 22 and Sonnet on September 28, and gave Max and Team plans monthly API credits. In between it opened a plugin directory with developer review and merged chat and Cowork into one surface.
LobeChat, now shipping as LobeHub, added a GitHub App that routes pull requests back to the agent that opened them. Its desktop canaries bundle a Computer Use app into macOS builds so agents can operate the local machine.
Baseten shipped web search as a server-side hosted tool, pulling current content from Exa, Keenable, Parallel or You.com, and reached CLI 1.0. It is also starting to sell DeepSeek V4.1 Flash at a dedicated Fast tier.
Wildcards
InvokeAI is the off-pattern entry: an image and video studio in a v7 rewrite, with alpha 2 adding MySQL and MariaDB backends and per-project boards. It is moving toward multi-user shared installs while the rest of the sector chases agents.
Themes that compounded
- Containment shipping with capability at GitHub Copilot and Claude.
- Runtime consolidation at Ollama, which keeps narrowing its legacy-GGUF migration around the MLX runner.
- Fast model catalog turnaround at opencode, with Grok 4.7 in Zen and Go within days.
- Quality analytics at DocsBot AI, whose Data Explorer surfaces knowledge gaps.
Watch this week
Watch whether Copilot's sandbox reaches the same default on other surfaces, and whether LobeHub's 2.2.20 canaries stabilise with the Computer Use app intact. Ollama is on v0.40.x point releases, so expect another migration-narrowing patch.
