Payload's v4 beta ships every few days, and most of the risk sits in the breaking-change notes

◆Current state
Payload is working through a v4 beta line, with six betas tagged between October 13 and October 29. Each carries fixes plus a short list of breaking changes: stable TanStack Start and nodemailer 10 in beta.2, React Flight for TanStack RSC responses in beta.3, a changed uploadReference contract in beta.5, and Lexical 0.53 in beta.6. The other steady thread is accessibility, with audit findings closed across several betas.
◆Where it's heading
The betas are widening where Payload runs rather than adding headline features: TanStack Start is treated as a real target alongside Next.js, and cache components arrived in beta.3. Accessibility and restore behaviour keep taking fixes, which reads as hardening of the admin UI before a stable cut. The breaking-change lists have stayed short and mostly hit integrators, such as custom transports, Lexical users and third-party upload adapters.
◆Prediction
More betas on the same two-to-five-day spacing are the likely next step. The entries give no stable date, so the v4.0.0 timing is unclear.

v4 beta.6: Lexical 0.53, restores always return as drafts

beta.6 brings the Lexical 0.53 upgrade, flagged as breaking, plus custom CLI error exit codes and a rule that restored versions always come back as drafts. It is the latest step in hardening the admin UI before stable.

v4 beta.5: signed upload receipts, stricter password reset

beta.5 is a fix release with teeth: signed adapterData on public upload receipts, password validation on reset, and hidden fields dropped from GraphQL mutation inputs. Third-party upload adapters must now read extra fields from uploadReference.clientData.

v4 beta.4: Node 24.22.1 minimum and accessibility audit fixes

beta.4 raises the minimum Node version to 24.22.1 and closes a long list of accessibility audit findings. TanStack Start gets up to 3x faster initial loads in dev, more evidence that it is a first-class target in v4.

v4 beta.3: cache components and React Flight for TanStack

beta.3 adds cache components support and moves TanStack Start RSC responses to React Flight, a breaking change. The two changes move v4 forward on Next.js and TanStack Start at once.

    v4 beta.2: stable TanStack Start, nodemailer 10

beta.2 moves the adapter to stable TanStack Start and upgrades to nodemailer 10 to resolve security advisories, breaking custom transports built on nodemailer 9. This is where TanStack support stopped tracking a moving target.

v4 beta.1: codemod defaults to beta tag, docs cleanup

A small cleanup beta: the codemod now defaults to the beta tag, plus docs fixes and a template type error. Nothing here changes what v4 does.
