Kodi 22 reaches its first release candidate, with HDR subtitles the last visible gain.

◆Current state
v22 Piers reached RC1 in late September. FFmpeg moves to 9.0.2 and libass to 0.17.5, and the fix list runs across video, disc, audio and subtitle handling. The one user-visible addition with real weight is HDR overlay support, including UHD PGS subtitles, with tone mapping to SDR on Windows.
◆Where it's heading
The cycle has narrowed as the betas suggested it would. Blu-ray work has moved from new menus to playlist matching, library updates and optical-drive faults, and many fixes target crashes, hangs and shutdown races. New capability now appears only where it completes something the alphas began, as with HDR subtitles following HDR playback work.
◆Prediction
Further candidates or a final Piers release are the next step, and these notes point to fixes rather than features. No entry gives a release date.

    The first candidate upgrades FFmpeg to 9.0.2, adds HDR overlays including UHD PGS subtitles, and clears a long list of hangs, crashes and disc faults. It marks the shift the betas were heading toward: the Piers feature set is settled and stabilization has taken over.

    Beta 2 rebases on FFmpeg 9.0.1 and Libbluray 1.5.0

    The second beta pairs two dependency rebases — FFmpeg 9.0.1 and Libbluray 1.5.0 — with a long correction pass across video, HDR, Blu-ray, audio, subtitles and PVR. HDR screenshots are newly enabled and ReplayGain PreAmp is recentred on 0 dB, but the bulk is platform-specific playback repair, which is the expected shape once a foundations cycle reaches beta.
