Whimsical vs Zettlr: at a glance
What is Whimsical?
Whimsical's pitch to Miro and Lucid users: paste your work in and keep editing it
Whimsical now accepts pastes from Miro, FigJam, Lucidchart, Lucidspark, Excalidraw, tldraw, Canva, Visio and Mural as editable objects rather than flat images. A week earlier it added multi-page files, which replace tabbed folders, along with expandable nested content in Docs and a persistent search sidebar. These sit on top of the Ask Whimsical agent and MCP access shipped earlier this year.
What is Zettlr?
Zettlr added admonitions after six years, then spent a release fixing its updater.
Zettlr 4.8.0 brought admonitions, a feature six years in the making, plus translation updates and a fix for a long-standing logic bug in search. 4.9.0 followed in late October to stop a false 'Update failed' error introduced by 4.8, drop macOS 12 and old Ubuntu support, distrust the eMudhra TLS certificates and render reference-style images.

◆ Current state
Whimsical now accepts pastes from Miro, FigJam, Lucidchart, Lucidspark, Excalidraw, tldraw, Canva, Visio and Mural as editable objects rather than flat images. A week earlier it added multi-page files, which replace tabbed folders, along with expandable nested content in Docs and a persistent search sidebar. These sit on top of the Ask Whimsical agent and MCP access shipped earlier this year.
◆ Where it's heading
The recent work is about capturing teams from other tools and keeping their files organized once they arrive. Paste import removes the rebuild cost of switching, and multi-page files let one file hold Boards and Docs together. MCP keeps growing in the background, gaining file moves, date search and direct link reading in the September release.
◆ Prediction
Expect more MCP capability on the same release cadence, since recent releases keep adding to it.
Zettlr
2.5COLLAB
Zettlr added admonitions after six years, then spent a release fixing its updater.
◆ Current state
Zettlr 4.8.0 brought admonitions, a feature six years in the making, plus translation updates and a fix for a long-standing logic bug in search. 4.9.0 followed in late October to stop a false 'Update failed' error introduced by 4.8, drop macOS 12 and old Ubuntu support, distrust the eMudhra TLS certificates and render reference-style images.
◆ Where it's heading
Releases arrive roughly monthly and alternate between a headline writing feature and cleanup of the previous one. The app is tracking Electron's platform support, so older operating systems will keep falling away.
◆ Prediction
A small 4.9.x fix release or a feature-led 4.10 in about a month fits the pattern; the entries don't hint at its contents.
