What is Apache SkyWalking?

SkyWalking is rebuilding its own foundations — its own database, its own runtime, and now GenAI traces

Apache SkyWalking ships roughly one major a year. 10.4.0 added GenAI observability, replaced the Groovy-dependent runtime with a new OAL V2 engine, and became compatible with Grafana Tempo. Before it, 10.3.0 landed a new trace model in BanyanDB, and 10.2.0 removed the H2 storage option permanently while deepening BanyanDB support.

What is Fluent Bit?

Fluent Bit keeps two lines alive while the 5.x branch quietly opens 5.1.

Development runs on parallel trains: 5.0.x with 5.1.0 just tagged, and 4.2.x as the maintenance line that receives backports of the same fixes weeks later. The content is overwhelmingly defensive — out-of-bounds reads in the snappy framed parser, a 100% CPU hang and use-after-free in in_forward, memory leaks in out_stackdriver, endian-safe gzip magic-number reads, fuzzer hardening. New capability shows up in small increments: user-defined Windows performance counters via PDH, eBPF exec tracing, IANA timezone support for native timestamps, OTLP resource grouping preserved through the pipeline.

Apache SkyWalking vs Fluent Bit: editorial side-by-side

A0.0

SkyWalking is rebuilding its own foundations — its own database, its own runtime, and now GenAI traces

◆ Current state

Apache SkyWalking ships roughly one major a year. 10.4.0 added GenAI observability, replaced the Groovy-dependent runtime with a new OAL V2 engine, and became compatible with Grafana Tempo. Before it, 10.3.0 landed a new trace model in BanyanDB, and 10.2.0 removed the H2 storage option permanently while deepening BanyanDB support.

◆ Where it's heading

Two rewrites are running at once. Storage is consolidating onto BanyanDB, SkyWalking's purpose-built database, with alternatives being removed rather than deprecated. The query and aggregation layer is moving off Groovy onto a typed, immutable OAL V2 engine with real error locations. GenAI observability arriving on top of that suggests the foundations work was clearing room for new telemetry types.

◆ Prediction

Expect the next major to extend GenAI observability and continue narrowing supported storage backends toward BanyanDB, with further OAL V2 migration on the way.

5.0

Fluent Bit keeps two lines alive while the 5.x branch quietly opens 5.1.

◆ Current state

◆ Where it's heading

This is a project spending its effort on the reliability of a component that sits in the critical path of everyone's logging. The recurring pattern — parser and protocol handling fixes, memory safety in output plugins, fuzz-test infrastructure — reads as a sustained hardening campaign rather than feature development, with OpenTelemetry and Windows the two places where the surface is still growing.

◆ Prediction

Expect 5.1.x to build out while 4.2.x continues receiving the same fixes as backports, and for OTLP handling and Windows metrics inputs to remain where new options appear. The 5.1.0 note carries only a test commit, so what distinguishes the new minor line is not yet visible from the changelog.
