What is Shopify?

Shopify is building WhatsApp into a full channel, from opt-in capture to campaign send.

The WhatsApp build-out now spans both ends of the funnel: Shopify Messaging sends marketing campaigns, and as of this week Shopify Forms can capture the marketing consent those campaigns require. Around it the window is channel and operations breadth — Microsoft Advertising joins Campaign Autopilot, analytics charts carry app-added annotations, UPS return labels can be created from any fulfilled order, and Shopify Payments drops its eight-currency cap on payout bank accounts. Nothing here is a rewrite of the platform; all of it widens what a merchant can do without leaving the admin.

What is OpenBoxes?

OpenBoxes is tightening data integrity in inventory workflows, and shipping hotfixes to prove it.

OpenBoxes ships numbered releases with a trail of hotfixes behind each one, several of which were backdated into a single day in the feed. The current line, 0.9.8, fixed three GitHub security advisories and made product import fail loudly when a referenced category does not exist, with an opt-in property for sites that need the old auto-creating behaviour. Feature work sits in shipment rollback events, putaway logging and invoice list ergonomics.

Shopify is building WhatsApp into a full channel, from opt-in capture to campaign send.

◆ Current state

The WhatsApp build-out now spans both ends of the funnel: Shopify Messaging sends marketing campaigns, and as of this week Shopify Forms can capture the marketing consent those campaigns require. Around it the window is channel and operations breadth — Microsoft Advertising joins Campaign Autopilot, analytics charts carry app-added annotations, UPS return labels can be created from any fulfilled order, and Shopify Payments drops its eight-currency cap on payout bank accounts. Nothing here is a rewrite of the platform; all of it widens what a merchant can do without leaving the admin.

◆ Where it's heading

Each release removes a reason to run a second tool, and the WhatsApp sequence shows the method more clearly than the rest. Shopify shipped the send side first, then went back for the collection side five weeks later, which is how you finish a channel rather than announce one. Advertising, messaging, returns and multi-currency banking are all being pulled inside one piece at a time; none is the strongest standalone product in its category, but each is close enough to keep the merchant in place.

◆ Prediction

With consent capture and campaign send both in place, the next gap in the WhatsApp funnel is what happens between them — triggered or automated sends off the opt-in rather than manually built campaigns. Campaign Autopilot's automatic budget allocation across channels is the template Shopify already has for that.

OpenBoxes is tightening data integrity in inventory workflows, and shipping hotfixes to prove it.

◆ Current state

OpenBoxes ships numbered releases with a trail of hotfixes behind each one, several of which were backdated into a single day in the feed. The current line, 0.9.8, fixed three GitHub security advisories and made product import fail loudly when a referenced category does not exist, with an opt-in property for sites that need the old auto-creating behaviour. Feature work sits in shipment rollback events, putaway logging and invoice list ergonomics.

◆ Where it's heading

The through-line across 0.9.6 to 0.9.8 is auditability. TransactionSource entries are now written during record-stock, cycle count and inventory import; putaway and rollback events are logged; product-change and inventory-transaction reports gained exports. The project is moving from 'the stock number is right' to 'you can reconstruct how the stock number got there', which is what its humanitarian supply-chain users need at audit time.

◆ Prediction

Expect the parser components added in 0.9.8 to be put to work on stricter import validation elsewhere, following the category change.
