The pattern is a platform consolidating after expansion: Sanity now maintains several surfaces that must behave identically, and this window is mostly the cost of that. Presence working in both directions and the media grid's shared card design both point the same way — apps built on the SDK are being brought to parity with the Studio rather than treated as second-class clients. The MCP server continues its own steady track, now able to run a limited set of CLI commands without shell access, which keeps agents inside sanctioned operations.
Expect the App SDK to keep closing parity gaps with the Studio, and Media Library performance work to continue past the grid into other large-library surfaces. The MCP server's CLI tool will likely widen its allowed command set as usage clarifies what agents actually reach for.

The GraphQL API is now the only API, and the deprecation of plan in favour of planConnection back in 2.7.0 shows the same consolidation happening inside it. Alongside that, the real-time surface keeps growing — SIRI Lite, extra calls, GTFS-RT support for new and replacement trips — while graph build memory consumption gets cut release over release. The 2.9.0 release being a Java version bump and nothing else suggests the API work has run its course.
With the REST removal done and the runtime moved to Java 25, the next release is more likely to concentrate on real-time data handling than on API surface.
