What is Rocket.Chat?

Rocket.Chat's 8.7 release train is six candidates deep with almost nothing user-facing in them.

Rocket.Chat is an open-source team chat and collaboration platform, and its feed right now is entirely the 8.7.0 release-candidate train — six tags between July 23 and August 6. Nearly every one carries the identical body: a Meteor version bump and updated core-typings and rest-typings dependencies. The engine floor is unchanged across all six (Node 22.22.3, Deno 2.3.1, MongoDB 8.0, Apps-Engine 1.65.1-rc.0), so the platform substrate is settled and the remaining work is shakeout.

What is Tella?

Tella adds a Free plan, redesigns the editor, and broadens distribution into Intercom and beyond.

Tella is in a sustained editor-polish-plus-distribution cycle. The big change: a Free plan now sits alongside Pro, paired with an in-product AI support assistant. The editor was redesigned with a left-side toolbar, lighter UI, and a new transcript sidebar. New layouts (50/50 split) and finer camera-bubble positioning (3×3 grid plus three sizes across orientations) give creators more compositional control. Distribution widens with an Intercom Help Center integration and a refreshed tella.com.

Rocket.Chat's 8.7 release train is six candidates deep with almost nothing user-facing in them.

◆ Current state

Rocket.Chat is an open-source team chat and collaboration platform, and its feed right now is entirely the 8.7.0 release-candidate train — six tags between July 23 and August 6. Nearly every one carries the identical body: a Meteor version bump and updated core-typings and rest-typings dependencies. The engine floor is unchanged across all six (Node 22.22.3, Deno 2.3.1, MongoDB 8.0, Apps-Engine 1.65.1-rc.0), so the platform substrate is settled and the remaining work is shakeout.

◆ Where it's heading

This is what a release looks like while it stabilizes: the substantive changes landed before rc.1, and the tags since are dependency churn with one real fix among them. Read the cadence carefully — six tags in two weeks measures release-candidate activity, not shipped capability, and the actual 8.7.0 feature list will arrive with the GA notes rather than accumulate across these candidates. The pattern repeats each minor version, so the RC tags are best treated as progress markers on one release.

◆ Prediction

8.7.0 GA is the obvious next tag. The gaps between candidates have not tightened in a way that dates it — rc.1 and rc.2 came an hour apart, then eight days to rc.3 — so the remaining blocker list is not readable from the notes.

Tella adds a Free plan, redesigns the editor, and broadens distribution into Intercom and beyond.

◆ Current state

Tella is in a sustained editor-polish-plus-distribution cycle. The big change: a Free plan now sits alongside Pro, paired with an in-product AI support assistant. The editor was redesigned with a left-side toolbar, lighter UI, and a new transcript sidebar. New layouts (50/50 split) and finer camera-bubble positioning (3×3 grid plus three sizes across orientations) give creators more compositional control. Distribution widens with an Intercom Help Center integration and a refreshed tella.com.

◆ Where it's heading

The product is leaning into accessible-funnel-plus-creative-control: lower the barrier to start (Free plan), make the editor look modern and inviting, and embed videos where customers already are (Intercom). View notification controls and webhook events for viewer activity hint at an upcoming push toward integration-ready video analytics.

◆ Prediction

Expect more distribution surfaces (Slack, Notion-style embeds beyond Intercom) and AI features beyond the support assistant — likely auto-chapters, B-roll generation, or transcript-driven editing. The Free plan likely drives an experimentation phase before the next pricing/packaging tightening.
