A side-by-side editorial comparison of Prometheus and Skaffold — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Prometheus 3.16 reaches rc.4 with an integral() function and stricter exemplar handling
Prometheus 3.16 is on its fourth release candidate, dated 3 November. Beyond rc.2's stable Smoothed and Anchored selectors and flag-gated query cost limits, rc.4 adds an experimental integral() PromQL function, per-query start-timestamp overrides via an HTTP header, and metadata-wal-records in Agent mode. It also tightens accounting: subquery samples now count toward query statistics, and exemplars with duplicate label names are rejected.
Skaffold 2.25 finally carries notes, and they are dependency bumps and a Go 1.27 upgrade.
Skaffold cut 2.19 through 2.25 between April and mid-September on a roughly monthly rhythm, after a short 2.18 patch series in March and April. Most entries are just install commands per platform. Version 2.25.0 on September 16 is the first in this window with a change list, and it is all maintenance: Go 1.27.1, containerd, gRPC, buildkit and go-git bumps, plus a docs announcement on the V2 and YAML reference pages.

The 3.16 cycle is about making query cost measurable and controllable: accurate sample counts are a prerequisite for the cost limits rc.2 introduced. Remote Write 2.0 keeps shedding legacy metadata metrics, and the patch tracks (3.15.x, 3.13 LTS) keep moving separately on security rebuilds.
A 3.16.0 GA is the likely next entry, given four candidates in about a week; whether query-cost leaves its feature flag in that release is not yet visible.

The monthly minors look like dependency hygiene rather than feature work, and the empty New Features and Fixes sections in 2.25 confirm it for that release. No entry has appeared since mid-September, which breaks the monthly rhythm the project held through the summer.
If cadence resumes, expect a 2.26 with another round of Go and dependency updates; the feed gives no sign of feature work.
